Doom (HD DVD, 2006, Unrated Edition)

Andrzej Bartkowiak, The Rock, Karl Urban|Theatrical release: 2005 | Rating: Unrated

Movie synopsis

In the not-so-distant future, a portal has been discovered leading from Earth to Mars, where the government operates a research base to examine the ruins of a lost civilization; scientists are studying it, conducting experiments they perhaps shouldn't be, and trying find out what happened. Answer: nothing good. That's what Sarge (The Rock) and his unit of high-tech Marines find out the hard way when they're sent to investigate a disturbance on the base--which turns out to be nothing less than an infestation of terrifying, evil, flesh-eating monsters.DOOM, based on one of the most popular video games of all time, knows exactly what it wants to do, and wastes no time in doing it. Andrzej Bartkowiak, the director of lean, effective action flicks like ROMEO MUST DIE and EXIT WOUNDS, gets right to the meat of the movie: marines versus monsters in dark, dank corridors. The Rock brings just the right balance of bad-ass attitude and deadpan humor to the role of Sarge, while the cast's other standout is Reaper (LORD OF THE RINGS' Karl Urban), who tries to repair his strained relationship with his sister Samantha (Rosamund Pike), one of the base's scientists. They're joined by a motley crew, including the twisted Portman, intensely religious Goat, affable Duke, and newbie The Kid. While the plot differs from that of the game in a few key ways, it remains true to the spirit of the original--a no-frills fest of shooting, explosions, gore, and vicious zombies. The game was, of course, a "first-person shooter," and in an inspired moment, the movie turns itself into one for a stretch. It's exhilarating, as are several surprising twists that separate this fun, streamlined action extravaganza from lesser video game adaptations.

Amazing Quality

Created: 11/08/06
Although i am more of a Blu-Ray Fan myself, i must say the HD-DVD quality is top of the line. This Movie is suspense filled and action packed. Based on the Video Game the specially trained tectical squad are the only people allowed in or out of a scientific research base on mars. As to not ruin the movie for those of you who have not seen it, i will focus more on the quality of the movie than the actual plot itself. By using HD-DVD or High Density - Digital Versital Disc, there are more pixels per square inch, which means you can take any film recorded movie and turn it into HD. The HD-DVD does this amazingly well. The movie is clear and sharp no matter where you look on the screen. On my 56 inch JVC hd-ila a regular dvd player is blurry and fuzzy, with the hd-dvd player, the picture is HD, just as clear as the programming you would get from your cable provider. Currently i would not recommend purchasing an HD-DVD player, or a Blu-Ray Player, the industry is waiting for your response, let them know you won't pay the 500-1000 dollar price for the player, wait until they drop the price. If they dont sell 500,000 before the end of 2006, they will drop the price drastically.
In My Opinion, wait, then by your player, HD if you want backwards compatability and cheaper price, and Blu-Ray if you want new technology with more movie titles.

Hope it helps!

There's a lightswitch there...use it!

Why run around using your gun mounted flashlight when you're hunting down monsters and zombies, when all you have to do is turn on the lights? Because it is a popcorn action flick, so I'm just going to have to live with it.

The Rock is what sold this movie, but Karl Urban is the one who carries it. He was also great in the underrated Pathfinder.

If you like the Resident Evils, check Doom out, too. It isn't as good as the RE's, but it will keep you entertained.

Great HD DVD Movie - A Must Have for All Collections!!!

Created: 15/11/08
Doom in HD is a fantastic way to showcase the resolution capabilities of the HD DVD format. The audio is great, the video is great, the storyline is great, the goriness and violence on the big screen is great. This is a great adaptation of the original video game, and even has the obligatory first-person chainsaw scene!!!

Buy this movie before the HD DVD versions of it are all gone!!!

As sharp as you can get. BluRay has nothing to compare

This has some of the sharpest Picture quality of any movie out there. Yeah.. it is not the best plot, more a a guy thing. But when rating the PQ and audio this when viewed on the same Sony 50" LCD TV running the BluRay version wins hands down. Images JUMP of the screen. So crisp and clean that you really wonder if you are watching TV. So far I have yet to find a single movie on BluRay that can compete with the same version on HD-DVD. Why have both.. well.. some movies are not on HD-DVD.. really too bad as it is the far superior format at the moment...

Although it is the popular opinion to put this movie down, popular opinion rarely represents an accurate portrayal of something outside of the main stream flow, such as DOOM. For one thing, it is sure to be interesting to fans of the DOOM franchise. I have been a fan ever since I first installed the half a dozen floppy discs on my Windows 95 PC and I really wasn't that disappointed in this telling of story. Although it deviates from the strict invasion of Hell represented in the games, there is a spiritual undertone present in the plot, that in some ways makes the story more unnerving. This is represented by an excessively, religious member of the group who cuts crosses into his arm if he takes God’s name in vain and another, who's parents died at the site where all the action takes place, who says, "This place is Hell, it always has been." In addition, Karl Urban and The Rock, give solid performances, as does the female lead. This move may be a little "campy", but that only adds to its charm. There are also good special effects of monsters and all the other fast paced action. Also, there is a Doom first person scene that has the impression of one continuous take. Definitely some action not to be missed!
