    Album Notes
Joe Bussard is a veteran record collector (owning over 25,000 78s) and disc jockey who delights in sharing his recorded treasures with others. This CD allows one the opportunity to hear some of his favorite recordings, many of which are rarities. The 24 selections include country blues, 1920s good-time music, a few jazz performances (the most common of the recordings), early country music, string bands, and several unclassifiable numbers. Long "Cleve" Reed's "Original Stack O'Lee Blues" is heard from its only existing copy. Ranging from Big Bill Broonzy and Luis Russell's jazz band to Gene Autry and Gitfiddle Jim, this is a valuable set that is quite enjoyable from start to finish. Bussard's enthusiasm for early music is felt throughout the extensive liner notes, which tell tales of his life as a record collector. This single CD (hopefully there will be more) is highly recommended to those wondering what the excitement is to pre-swing music. ~ Scott Yanow

collection of recordings from Mr. Bussard's 78 RPMs

    Created: 10/12/07
This product is great, if you are interested in early American recordings on 78 RPM. This CD is a compilation of some of the cuts from the OVER 25,000 records in Mr. Bussard's collection. The importance of Bussard's collection is summarized in the ample liner notes: Bussard collects COMMERCIAL recordings from the 1920's and early 1930's. The Smithsonian and the Library of Congress have extensive recordings that THEY made of artists from the era, but not many of the examples of Mr. Bussard's commercial recordings, which are well-preserved. Unfortunately, the needles on the standard phonographs of that period quickly destroyed or harmed many of the recordings (that's why that sound so scratchy). Bussard went out of his way to find unplayed recordings, and has treated them with extreme care. When Bussard found artists that he liked who were not on commercial recordings, he recorded them himself, and started his own commercial label, "Fonotone Records". Try buying a Fonotone record here on EBay for a bargain. They go for high dollars.
