Movie synopsis

Director Bruce Beresford's affinity for the subtleties of southern life is apparent in this adaptation of Alfred Uhry's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Starring Jessica Tandy as Daisy Werthan and Morgan Freeman as Hoke Colburn, the film opens in late-1940s Atlanta. Since Miss Daisy is becoming a menace behind the wheel, her son, Boolie (Dan Aykroyd), ignores her protests and hires Hoke, a black chauffeur. When the feisty matron decides to resist necessity and walk to the store, the equally stubborn chauffeur follows her in her car. As he says to Boolie, "I used to rassle hogs down to the ground...ain't nary a hog got away from me yet." But Hoke's methods are gentleness and patience, and as the years elapse in his ongoing tug-of-war with the temperamental Daisy, she begins to tacitly acknowledge his wisdom. When she expresses annoyance over the demands of the nascent civil rights movement, Hoke points out to the Jewish woman the similarity between the attack on her synagogue and Klan attacks on black churches. But it is only after many years together that they can finally admit to the depth of the friendship they have shared. The two stars give unforgettable performances, and Beresford's direction is a model of restraint.

An old woman and her chauffer

Created: 17/04/08
Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman are awesome in this tale of a proud, Jewish, well-to-do elderly woman who refuses to admit she should no longer get behind the wheel of a car. Her son hires Morgan Freeman to drive her around. Jessica goes kicking and screaming before giving in to her new way of getting around. Jessica finally develops a tolerance for Morgan. The story is funny and sad at times but the real story is the relationship that developes between these two. Awesome cast. Strong story. This is one that you will watch over and over. Very soothing and moving film and a must have for your DVD collection.

I have always really enjoyed this film. Took me long enough to get it on DVD.
Glad to have it widescreen.

A heart warming story between Daisy & Hoke.

It deserved the Best Picture Oscar as did Jessica. MORGAN SHOULD HAVE WON BEST ACTOR, HE DESERVED IT.

Dan, got an Oscar nomination as well. 1989 with this & "Ghostbusters 2", his career just basically stopped right there. Never had another hit film or TV show.

In these old fashion, GLAD THEY STOPPED MAKING THESE, CARD BOARD DVD holder. I have ALWAYS hated these things.

OK extras on it

Film needs a new DVD release.

Excellent movie well acted with great actors!!!!!!!!!

I have loved this movie from the first time I saw it. The actors Jessica Tandy, Morgan Freeman and Dan Akroyd really did a great job in this movie. This film gives a lot to the audience. Jessica Tandy does a great job playing an feisty but loveable lady who does not want to admit to getting older. It give a wonderful and believable story of 2 people from totally different back grounds. Who have there ups and downs. But end up being the best of friends. It also portrays what is was like for the coloreds went through in the deep south with the whites only issues. Dan Akroyd did a wonderful job as her loving but controlling son, who is married to a women that no mother could like. This movie is really about 2 people who come together and form a wonderful beautiful friendship that last through out their lives. There was really nothing that I did not like about tis movie.

Driving Miss Daisy

Perhaps one of the best movies produced in recent times. Based on the evolution of a friendship between the feisty Miss Daisy and her driver the steadfast Hoke Colburn, showing us indeed, that soul mates come many forms. During a recent heart wrentching 6 month period as my father lay dying in the ICU after surgery, we were taking turns shuttling my mother back and forth to the hospital, an 80 miles round trip, we began to refer to the task as "driving miss daisy." My mom, of course, is our own version of Miss Daisy. I bought this movie for her. Kudos to the director, Alfred Uhry who reminds us that even close to the end of one's time that love and friendhsip remain paramount There a too few movies that illustrate this. This movie is a timeless classic.
Finally, shopping eBay is convenient, I don't have time to do malls.

A film that will warm your heart

What a worthy film to watch! So full of inspiration and simplicity, Miss Jessica Tandy is delightful as a southern matron who eventually falls for her patient chauffeur, Hoke. A film that reminds us that friendship has no boundaries, two different people with two different backgrounds realize that they are more alike than different. One of my favorite films! Please watch it with your loved ones!
