Publisher's Note
No more than a dark pencil line on a blank page. A horizon line, maybe. But also a slot for blackness to pour through...

A terrible construction site accident takes Edgar Freemantle's right arm and scrambles his memory and his mind, leaving him with little but rage as he begins the ordeal of rehabilitation. A marriage that produced two lovely daughters suddenly ends, and Edgar begins to wish he hadn't survived the injuries that could have killed him. He wants out. His psychologist, Dr. Kamen, suggests a "geographic cure," a new life distant from the Twin Cities and the building business Edgar grew from scratch. And Kamen suggests something else.

"Edgar, does anything make you happy?"

"I used to sketch."

"Take it up again. You need hedges...hedges against the night."

Edgar leaves Minnesota for a rented house on Duma Key, a stunningly beautiful, eerily undeveloped splinter of the Florida coast. The sun setting into the Gulf of Mexico and the tidal rattling of shells on the beach call out to him, and Edgar draws. A visit from Ilse, the daughter he dotes on, starts his movement out of solitude. He meets a kindred spirit in Wireman, a man reluctant to reveal his own wounds, and then Elizabeth Eastlake, a sick old woman whose roots are tangled deep in Duma Key. Now Edgar paints, sometimes feverishly, his exploding talent both a wonder and a weapon. Many of his paintings have a power that cannot be controlled. When Elizabeth's past unfolds and the ghosts of her childhood begin to appear, the damage of which they are capable is truly devastating. The tenacity of love, the perils of creativity, the mysteries of memory and the nature of the supernatural -- Stephen King gives us a novel as fascinating as it is gripping and terrifying.

Stephen King's Writing Thrives in Salt Air and Sunshine

Created: 05/09/08
After reading Stephen King's Duma Key, it is obvious that Florida's salt air and sunshine must agree with him. Like Edgar Freemantle, the book's protagonist, King seems to have found voices in the churning sea shells. The artistic style with which this book is written is like a refreshing breeze at sunset.

Edgar Freemantle, a construction company owner, is nearly crushed to death by a piece of equipment, losing an arm, and most of his senses, due to a head injury. On the advice of his psychiatrist he relocates to the Florida Keys, specifically to Duma Key, and moves into a house he fondly calls "Big Pink." Shortly after moving in, Freemantle discovers he has supernatural artistic abilities. But his talent becomes a liability when he realizes that his artwork influences real-life events and people. Treks along the beach, part of his physical therapy, lead him to a kindred spirit, Elizabeth. But when the ghosts of her past begin to appear to Freemantle, he begins to understand the true source for his talent.

Duma Key is a ripping good tale. King's writing has a deftness and poetic prose that has been absent from his work for quite some time.

Duma Key Hardcover Book

Created: 19/01/08
King has written dozens of #1 bestsellers, some unforgettable and others forgettable, but with this new horror story I think he may be back on track like years before! This book takes on new ground for Mr. King. Hope to see a movie out of it.
The book explores an eerie stretch of Florida coast where Edgar Freemantle has come to build his life after an accident that cost him his arm and head injuries that leave him prone to uncontrollable rages and memory lapses. He ends up in Duma Key only because his Dr. felt he needed a change of place, a geographical cure. Edgar hopes that while here in Duma Key he can pick up the painting he use to love in his younger years. What he discovers, is that his talent is more powerful than he remembered. By that, it means that the things he paints become real! He also discovers that if he removes something from a painting, it will disappear in real life. Even people. He finally realizes that his newfound abilities are somehow tied to his elderly landlady, Elizabeth, but when the ghost of her past begin to appear, the real truth about his talent becomes quite terrifying. Now he must deal with the dark side of his talent.

Very interesting

Created: 06/06/10
I have been a huge Stephen King fan since 1978 when I read The Stand for the first time. I ran right out and bought a copy. Not too bad for a kid still in high school!

Living in Florida, it was an interesting premise to see how others viewed our beautiful state. As I read this book I was struck by the realization that it wasn't as odd as some previous novels were. It took a long time for it to get a bit creepy but hey, that's what Stephen King does best. The book was well written with the right amount of weirdness thrown in.

Personally I enjoyed all 609 pages and thought the premise behind it was something I hadn't encountered before - not even in his books.

The story is about a man recovering from a horrific accident and being encouraged to do something he enjoyed doing in what he refers to as his 'former life'. Turns out drawing/sketching was something he had enjoyed doing, so he rents a house on one of the Florida Keys to try to recover/rebuild his life. There his muse comes to him (no, not an apparition) and he begins to draw. The story builds from there to his exploring his island paradise and befriend the other people that live at the other end of the Key.

While this book is fictional many of the places mentioned in the book are real and do exist on the Suncoast of Florida, a place I call home. Duma Key is fictional however.

All in all, it was a good book and he does get a bit loquacious describing things and places.

I would recommend if you are looking for a good spooky book, this would be a good choice for you. Enjoy!

A Constant Reader :)

Excellent Book - Duma Key, Stephen King (2008)

Created: 01/07/08
I am a diehard Stephen King fan, so my review might be a little biased. I'm not finished with the book, I've got about 50 pages left to go, but I've gotten the general idea and I think anyone could pick this book up and enjoy it, regardless if you've been into SK books before.

At first I didn't like how in the first chapter the main character's life falls apart, I thought it gave the story an immediately negative tone that I didn’t understand that because it wasn't so much a scary feeling, but a sad one. If you feel this way too I urge you to keep reading. You'll find out why it’s necessary to start off on such a violent and sad beginning once you get near the end. Like all of SK's post-millennia work, the intricacy of the story will capture and amaze you. And, most importantly, give you a good scare.

King at his best

Created: 11/03/08
Another of King's wonderful tales of horror, right out of the same box of tricks he pulled some of his greatest stuff from. After an accident that severly disables him he moves to Duma Key in Florida where he takes up painting and finds out that his paintings have the ability of coming true. Without giving too much away, I think this would be a very good book for any King fan, especially a vintage King reader.
