    Industry Reviews
"An obviously voracious reader, [Kaplan] is gifted at synthesis and lyrical retelling, and many readers will put down EASTWARD TO TARTARY considerably more knowledgeable about the region than before."
San Francisco Chronicle Book Review - Alix Christie (12/17/2000)

"This entire book is illuminated by an unillusioned intelligence and a steady sort of attention to deeper, longer-range trends rather than what might be called headline-news ephemera."
    New York Times (12/15/2000)

"[S]olid journalism combines with a gloomy sense of history to produce a worthy study...."

Kaplan weaves an interesting and informative pictureof the ethnic groups and nation-states that were carved from the former Ottoman Empire, from Hungary and ROmania to Jordan and Israel, and through the Caucauses. THe book is enjoyable a travelogue, but is very informative about the ethnic tensions that exist today in this region, and the history behind them. Mnadatory reading for anyone with an interest in the region, or anyone who cares about where the world is headed in the next 50 years.
