Product description

Synopsis
Tom Wolfe's THE ELECTRIC KOOL-AID ACID TEST is one of the most essential works on the 1960s counterculture, revolutionizing the way the reporters wrote about the world. This seminal work of the New Journalism, a style which explored the writer's own experience of the journey rather than merely reporting the bare facts, was written in a mind-bending barrage of words perfectly suited to the adventures of Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters as they launched out on the "Transcontinental Bus Tour." Starting on the West Coast in 1964, Kesey and the Pranksters, a group of friends and hangers-on, set out in a converted school bus driven by Neal Cassady, heading for New York, where Kesey's book SOMETIMES A GREAT NOTION was due to be published. Along the way, they introduced acid (then legal) to hundreds of like-minded folks and staged impromptu jam sessions with the Warlocks (who later became the Grateful Dead). They stayed one step ahead of the law as they made their way across the country, with Kesey wanted for marijuana possession by numerous agencies, including the FBI. They also met some of the most revolutionary figures of the day, including Dr. Timothy Leary, Terry Southern, and Allen Ginsberg. Wolfe's style, word usage, and vivid descriptions of these events have introduced much of the vocabulary of the Sixties into popular culture and entered the public consciousness to such a degree that THE ELECTRIC KOOL-AID ACID TEST has become, for many people, the final word on the era.

A history lesson about LSD, and the summer of love, through surrealism based on actually events that Tom Wolfe was involved with, as well as other well known icons from that era of time such as Hunter S. Thompson and Jerry Garcia. After reading about the summer of love and about the whole Owsley Stanley creating the pure form of LSD and writer Ken Kesey and the merry pranksters destorying the minds of people in search of opening doors of the mind that aren't suppose to be opened. A wild book with twists and turns in a time of history where a new way thought was beginning.

I've always enjoyed reading books by Tom Wolfe. This book was no exception; Although his writing style was very different from all the books I've read by him so far. This book was such a product of the era, as was the writing style. It reminded me of all the great writers of that time such as Jack Karouack. The free consciousness experimental style of the late 50's and 60's was perfected in this book. I loved reading about all the great characters of that time. I thought I knew about the 60's but now I know how and who were some of the important people and events who furthered and the cause. It is an American classic because the topics of discussion that were relevant then are still the topics of discussion in today's American culture.

I personally enjoy satire along with Tom Wolfes style. The book was sent to me in an outstanding state. I always love the smell of a new book. The only flaw was that the cover damages easily, but in the end it's no trouble at all. With the right care it will be well.
