Compressed Metal sound
Created: 14/03/11
I picked up the Metal Muff because I have a Soviet Big Muff Pi that cranks out some monster distortion that is good for a lot of stuff I do, but isn't exactly "metal". The Metal Muff has a pretty good overall distortion sound, but like other high gain distortion, the amount of compression added to the signal takes away from the dynamic expression available to you when you play through it. I own a Fullbore Metal as well, and choose the Metal Muff over it every time because it adds much less high frequency overkill to the signal. The EQ section works well for shaping the tone, and covers a wide range of boost and cut at three set frequencies. Can dial in a pretty good scooped sound, and can push the mids for a more mid driven sound. The high boost is a nice feature to help leads cut through the din. I think for the money, it's a pretty good pedal. Will it be the end all pedal for me? I think not. I still want to find something that offers a little bit more in terms of dynamic expression that suits my playing. I will keep it on my pedal board though as it does offer a pretty good, somewhat full bodied sound for my more metal songs. Looses a lot in terms of harmonics and expression, but I think that's going to be fairly characteristic of "metal" pedals in the price range. It seems to be of nice solid construction, so I can see it hanging around for a number of years. My Big Muff is ancient and keeps on tickin'. So, if the sound you're looking for is the highly compressed metal sound, I think this pedal is worth checking out. I got a pretty good deal on mine, and am not sorry to own it.

METAL MUFF IS THE ONE
Created: 05/03/11
personaly i have had metal pedals like boss,danelectro,dod,digitech,rocktron,line6 and the list goes on and on in the quest for metal tone that has it all. like great powercord and soloing ability. so far for me the EH METAL MUFF is the leader of them all. i bought one because i was bored with what i had going at the time and expected to be let down again but was very happy when i bought it. all any metalhead needs is one of these with a chorus and a delay pedal or whatever fx you like. and lets not forget an eq of some sort at the end of the chain for a little fine tuning and you will enjoy the taste of metal once again i promise. the only thing that isnt so hot is the top boost switch. unless you like annoying ear scratching highs. i love this pedal but it didnt even need the top boost !!! jeff

Not my favorite, but solid construction
Created: 13/12/10
Good idea but not particularly my favorite. It's solid construction metal box is definitely durable for gigging but everyone has there own tastes. I was hoping to get some special dark death metal tones and tweaky classic rock riff sound out of it but apparently it's not capable of doing it. You would have to purchase a Boss Distortion Pedal and put these two together to get that sound. I prefer to have one pedal do it all and I haven't quite found that one yet. So far Electro-Harmonix hasn't lived up to their name for me. I've been disappointed by most of the effects I bought from them regarding sound. The flexibility and available different sounds and extensive tonal qualities is what it is lacking. It is well made and definitely a pedal for those who are looking for the sound it provides. I recommend YouTube video examples that do not combine pedals to get an idea what it can do.

The Metal Muff is a very versatile pedal with tons of tone options. However the output leaves something to be desired. It is a great pedal for recording and dialing in all kinds of distortions... From mellow bluesy fuzz to over the top distortion it has you covered. But in a live application it leaves something to be desired. just doesn't have the oompff! that extra over the top of the mix that you look for in a pedal called the "metal" muff.
