Under-Appreciated Pedal for 70s Guitar Tones

Created: 09/04/11
I have both the original large version of this pedal, and the smaller diecast XO version. I love them both, though they have some differences.

The XO has an expression pedal input, and the original does not.
The original has a direct output, and the XO does not.
The original emits quite a bit of white noise hiss, and the XO does not.
The original tends to distort a bit if the input signal is too hot. The XO does not.
Both units alter your guitars original tone and frequency response noticeably. I feel it does so in a pleasing way, and is a reason to buy this pedal. But if you are hung-up on having your original tone filtered, avoid this pedal.

The original seems a bit beefier than the XO, but I have not tested that observation with any tools other than my own ears. It could be my imagination, and the fact that I fell in love with the original before the XO was released.

The Modulated Wah is super-fat and syrupy sounding, and can either be set to automate the wah with an oscillator, or set as a traditional wah-wah pedal with an expression pedal.

The Phaser is 3 stages, and has a gorgeous Univibe-like quality about it. Great phaser for those early 70s classic rock tones.

The Tremelo is the weakest setting on the Worm. It is useable, but will disappoint anyone who is looking for that choppy Johnny Marr-style tremelo, or a surf-style Fender vibrato emulation.

The Vibrato is a very subtle effect. The pitch-bend is not as deep as a Magnatone 260 vibrato, for example. But it is still a very tasty effect that adds a kind of antiquity to your guitar tone, as if it were playing from a warped vinyl LP. It is my second favorite setting on this pedal.

The Manual mode is also very useable, especially in the Phaser mode and the Wah mode. It behaves almost like a Q knob on a parametric EQ. Great for emphasizing mids, or getting a nasally tone.

I love this pedal so much, I have 2 of them. Nothing else out there quite like it.

This pedal is great and it's not the first one I've owned. I purchased the older version in the larger housing. I like the "vintage" vibe of the older style case and the sounds are just as cool. It's a great modulation effect and if you're looking for some older, more raw, less processed sounds, this is a pedal worth checking out. 4 modes, each equally intersting. Check out the demos on youtube and you can get an idea of what it's sonic possibilites are. One thing to note, it requires it's own power adapter since it doesn't operate on 9vdc. other than that, I can't think of anything that I don't like about this pedal. I also love the fact that it's made in the USA.

EHX just continues to make awesome pedals and effects. The WORM is an excellent solution to having a number of extra pedals, all combined into one. Sound is good and performance is solid. Having the expression pedal input adds flexibility.
Love the Worm.....love EHX.

Awsome pedal!

The pedal is great, and it came to me almost new, in box. The sound is really good, with four effects that sound really vintage. The vibrato and the modulated wah really sound like nothing I've seen. I'm modding it now so I can have true bypass and a slower rate setting with a switch. It helps out a lot if you change the power supply to 16V so the hiss and noise goes away. In a word to describe the pedal: superb! Recommended to any musician who wants analog effects at a low price and high sound quality.

Thanks!
