    Product description

    Synopsis
In his compelling history of the American West, S.C. Gwynne focuses on a forty-year period in which the Comanche tribe rose to prominence, skillfully held the American soldiers at bay, only to go down, eventually, in defeat. Gwynne's well-researched and well-told account provides fascinating information about the lives of the Comanches and their skill in battle, as well as essential facts about the delayed opening of the West. While keeping an eye on the major historical events--including several key wars--he focuses on two people: Cynthia Ann Parker--a pioneer woman captured by the Comanches and who later chose to live among the Comanches as her family--and her son, Quanah, who became a formidable Comanche chief. Gwynne packs a lot of detail into this popular history, as he both enlightens and holds the reader's interest.

Journalist S.C. Gwynne takes a novel approach to further unraveling the always enthralling, yet contentious, myth of the founding of the American West, using the half-white/half-Comanche chief Quanah Parker and his mother, Cynthia Ann Parker, to explore the largely forgotten Texas-Indian Wars, which lasted nearly the entirety of the 19th century. Spun with a vivid, occasionally thrilling narrative style, EMPIRE OF THE SUMMER MOON describes how the fierce, dogged pride of the mighty Comanche tribe led to epic clashes with white settlers on the Texas plains and hindered for four decades America's initial attempts to bring the new and intoxicating theory of manifest destiny westward.

    Industry Reviews
"EMPIRE OF THE SUMMER MOON isn't just an biography. It's a forceful argument about the place of Native American tribes in geopolitical history."

Best Quannah Parker book I have ever read

    Created: 14/02/11
I love to read true Texas history, not the version taught in school. This is a comprehensive history of the Comanche Tribe and the rise of a half white half Comanche to a position of leadership in his tribe, and also the story of his successfull adaptation to the white man's world after the subjugation of the native american peoples.

    The Comanches Ride Again

I love to read about Texas History and especially the Comanche Indians. This is a good book, although I disagree with Mr.Gwynne about Quanah's father being killed at The so called Battle of Pease River. Later years Quanah had been interviewed several times and always said his father was not there at the recapture of Quanah's mother. Nocona was away on a hunting foray.Another thing, Sul Ross was an opportunist.A lot of politics involved here. Mr. Gwynne was right on when he wrote about the Battle of Pease River, he mentioned it was on Mule Creek and this is correct. This is a good book about the ups and down of the Comanche Nation, sad state of affairs the way they were treated.

    Empire of the Summer Moon

    Created: 03/09/10
Empire of the Summer Moon was a wildly entertaining and rich look at Cherokee history and its demise caused not only by broken treaties, but more so the relentless westward movement of white settlers, who were amazing unafraid of the worst which may (and did!) befall them. Well-written and documented, and including pictures which are most satisfying, this book informs and educates with a story that is hard to put down. I recommend it most highly.

    Just What My Husband Wanted

    Created: 03/07/10
I bought this book for my husband for Father's Day. Since his family has traced their genealogy and found that they're related to Quanah Parker, it was especially interesting to him. He read it from cover to cover in no time.
