    Movie synopsis

Steven Spielberg's EMPIRE OF THE SUN, based on the autobiographical novel by J.G. Ballard, stars Christian Bale as Jim Graham, a British schoolboy separated from his upper-class colonial parents when the Japanese sweep into Shanghai during World War II. Temporarily orphaned, Jim attaches himself to Basie (John Malkovich), a fast-talking American opportunist determined make a buck off the spoils of war. Later, when the two are interned in a prison camp, Jim's boyish fantasies are fueled by the grace and daring of the Japanese fighter pilots whom he comes to idolize despite their enemy status. Spielberg's visually spectacular wartime epic is a testimony to the human will to survive and a child's ability to find wonder even in the midst of horror. Thirteen-year-old Welsh actor Christian Bale is brillant as Jim in his feature film debut. Spielberg himself identified more with Jim, a boy who is obsessed with flying and who experiences the death of his innocence, than with E.T.'s Elliott. After a year of negotiations with the Chinese, Spielberg and his crew were allowed to film in Shanghai, which was virtually unchanged since World War II.

    Brilliant story! Impressive and historical.

This movie is an incredible film based on a true story of a young boy that survived Japanese internment camps. The young Christian Bale does an excellent job convincing the audience. His hard work, practice, and willingness to get dirty prove that he's an excellent performer.

In addition to having a fantastic story, it has great visual moments like the crowded evacuation scenes or the conditions of the internment camps or lifelike flyovers of WWII era planes.

The biggest strength of this movie is it's tale of survival. It's a story of a 10 year old boy who is isolated from his parents and struggles to survive until it seems he eventually thrives. I recommend this movie and I think it should belong in every DVD collection.

    Forgotten Story

    Created: 04/10/10
GREAT movie, one of the best ever made. It's also one of the very few that shows much of what went on in China in WW2 ... what happened to the Chinese and what happened to the British civilians there. Of course it's the Americans that seem to "save the day" but getting past that is a real story of one small boy, lost to the war after being seperated from his parents, and learning to live in an Interment or Japanese work camp.

This is a MUST SEE for any WW2 history buff.

    EMPire of the Sun

    Created: 10/02/08
I bought the DVD Empire of the Sun because I'm a fan of Christian Bale. I watched this movie many many years ago and noticed how great of a performance of the young boy playing the main character --- I didn't realize that the boy was played by Christian Bale --- so I purchased this DVD. It was worth the buy! I appreciated the movie the second time around because this young man has grown up to be a great actor. The movie is excellent. The character of this young person is seen through all the years being alone (separated by chasos from his parents) in China before Pearl Harbour.

I love Christian Bale, this is one of his first movies. The movie deals with a young boy during the war when he is lost from his parents he is put into a prison camp. Where he spends many years. It is a very intense awesome movie. Also a few times you get to here the beautiful voice of Christian Bale sing as a young boy.
