I like the professional quality of this printer. It is far more robust than the 3880 which is more of a consumer 17" printer. Everything about the 4800 is great except that one has to flush the heads occasionally which expends ink and if you swap from matte black to gloss black it wastes a lot of ink.

Still my HP88XL cartridges cost $1.75 per millilitre where as buying Epson 220ml cartridges gets that down to less than $.50 per ml. At that rate one can afford to waste a little on head flushing, but try not to change the blacks, or plan things so you are making multiple prints in the swapped glossy or matte black.

As the 3880 does not have large ink cartridges available, it will always cost more to run, but on the upside, it does provide more borderless options than the commercial grade Epson Stylus Pro printers (4xxx and above) which only print borderless on roll media.

If you want to cover more size range, my choice would be to use a 7880 (24”) for large prints and the 2880 (13”) for borderless convenience of cut sheet stock up to 13” as well as handle CD/DVD direct printing, but there is a price to pay for that convenience as the 2880 does not have large cartridges available either.

I've had a series of Epson printers in my career. I had the Epson 2800 (I think) with a bulk ink system on it. It was a great day when I took a sledge hammer to that and bought a real printer the 4000. I still own the 4000 after 5 years of printing with it. Been a stable work horse for my shop. The 4800 I got for printing photo positives for screen printing. I bought the first 4800 used and wasn't too excited about the prospect. However, it has printed fairly consistently for the last 2 years. It tends to clog and need head cleanings, however, I'm not sure it wasn't operator error. My 4000 never had the type of issues I'm experiencing now. I will say, as long as the cartridges match in size, the nozzle clogging is kept to a minimum.
