Lang (vocals); Percy Faith, Ray Conniff, Frank DeVol, Ralph Burns, Marty Manning, Don Costa, Johnny Mandel, Torrie Zito, Robert Farnon (arranger, conduct); Al Cohn (tenor saxophone); Bobby Hackett (cornet); Jimmy Rowles, Tommy Flanagan (piano); Count Basie & His Orchestra; Ralph Sharon Trio.Producers include: Mitch Miller, Ernie Altschuler, Teo Macero, Danny Bennett,David Kahne.Compilation producers: Steve Berkowitz, Didier C. Deutsch.Recorded between 1951 & 2001.All tracks have been digitally remastered. It's almost shocking to realize that before this collection's release, the career of musical legend Tony Bennett had been extensively anthologized only in box-set format and never by a career-spanning two-disc compilation. Upon inspection, it seems like the ultimate no-brainer--pick some of the mainly highlights from this vocal sensation's 50-year career, put them in chronological order, and let the magic happen.Happen it does, as we're treated to gems from every phase of Bennett's oeuvre. Casual listeners may be surprised to learn that the '50s found Tony successfully reinventing Hank Williams's "Cold Cold Heart" alongside more customary fare such as signature song "Rags to Riches." No one will be shocked at the very necessary inclusion of the '60s comeback smash "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," but those who think of Bennett as an artifact belonging only to Sinatra's time will be educated by the subsequent material included here. From the sinuously jazzy "Steppin' Out with My Baby" to a moving take on the Elllington evergreen "Mood Indigo" and an album-closing duet with K.D. Lang, the more contemporary material here makes just as convincing a case as the earlier work for Bennett as THE living master of the Great American Songbook.

Wonderful Compilation

Created: 03/09/07
Being a professional jazz musician, the music and artistry of Tony Bennett has truly been an inspiration. This 2CD set takes you on a time travel of his music, starting with his first hit to make him a star, "Because of You". The first CD takes you on a chronological “hits” journey with the songs being mastered in their original monophonic recording. This really lets you feel as if you’re listening to these songs for the first time as if you were back there when first aired. As the tracks progress, the stereo recordings have been very well mastered as well.
You can hear how Mr. Bennett’s voice gradually transformed into the characteristic “raspyness” he is identified with now. In my personal judgment, I really like this vocal sound of his giving it a bit more edge for the more up-tempo swing tunes. This is not to ignore that the gentleman of song started his career with a beautiful velvet crooner sound.
The CD liner notes are in color, picturing all the album covers from his first to the album prior to “Duets”. Each track is identified to year of release and where in the charts it rated at that time. If you love great vocal jazz, wonderful standards, and classics, then this classy album set is a definite addition to your collection!

In God’s Harmony,
Roddy

I love Tony Bennett. He is one of the most amazing, talented artists that has lived on this earth. His voice is incredible, his music will hypnotize you and the lyrics will make you cry. This is one of the most amazing albums I have of him, with a variety of his best work that only makes you want to buy more. If you like Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett is at the same level if not better.
