Evil Under the Sun

Peter Ustinov again plays Hercule Poirot in the adaptation of Agatha Cristie's "Evil Under the Sun." He in joined by an extremely talented and well known cast that includes Academy Award winner Maggie Smith, Roddy McDowall, James Mason and Diana Rigg.
Ustinov plays the famous Belgian detective on vacation when a murder takes place. As often is the case with Agatha Christie mysteries, there isn't any lack of suspects, or motives. He discovers the clues and puts them together to determine the murderer.
Perhaps a better Poirot film than "Death on the Nile" that also had Ustinov as the lead character, this really is an interesting mystery. Ustinov brings a bit of the comic in his portrayal. There is one scene where he considers going into the ocean for a swim, but has a change of heart when he finds out the temperature of the water. So he does a bit of a pantomime, like he was swimming even though he is only ankle deep. It is funny because, in part, he seems to be doing it only for himself.
The story line is strong and the supporting cast do a nice job. The only negative is that it was formatted in widescreen 1.77:1, which at times make some of the film shooting look a little squeezed together a bit. But it is only occasional, and overall, the production is so good, that it is hardly noticeable.
A nice Agatha Christie adaptation that most mystery buffs will certainly enjoy.

Peter Ustinov, who is detective Hercule Poirot does a nifty adaptation of Agatha Christie's 1941 novel Evil Under the Sun. While vacationing at a luxury hotel on an island in the Adriatic, a sexy, obnoxious, and self-centered actress, Arlena Marshall (Diana Rigg), is murdered. Everyone at the sea hotel has a reason to knock her off — and they all have alibis. Terrific Sunday Movie!

Evil Under the Sun is a classic Agatha Christie "who dunnit". I have always liked the movie and had not seen it in several years so I picked it up. There is a great cast of characters who play in the movie, several who are no longer alive. If you like a good family freindly classic murder mystery this is a good one to own.

Hercule Poirot is at his best in this classic murder mystery, set in a luxurious resort on a Meditteranean Island in the 1930's.
Great cast, great dialogue, a must have for any fan of Agatha Christie's.
