Whereas its predecessor, the excellent ONCE AGAIN, stayed the course of smooth yet passionate retro-themed R&B, EVOLVER experiments with different sounds and styles. The lead single, "Green Light," with its amped-up programmed beat, synths, and cameo from Andre 3000, sounds more like a 21st-century club jam than an old-school throwback. Reggae, ballads, adult contemporary, and digitized contemporary R&B all make their way into the album's diverse musical stew. Whether it's the mellow, low-key funk of "It's Over," the synth-pop of "Satisfaction" (one can imagine the song being performed by Depeche Mode), or the guest spots from Brandy, Estelle, and Kanye West, EVOLVER keeps the listener guessing. It may not have the consistency of Legend's first two releases, but its cornucopia of interesting sounds and directions offer something for everyone.

Editorial Reviews
3 stars out of 5 -- When he moves away from the more straightforward ballads, it's obvious that Legend's maverick side is still intact....He's reaching out to address more universal themes, and finding the music to match.
Mojo

Legend is still at his best when he plays to his voice's strengths with clean-cut ballads like 'Everybody Knows.' -- Grade: B+
Entertainment Weekly

3 stars out of 5 -- EVOLVER proves that Legend remains one of R&B's most forward-looking craftsmen.
Spin

3.5 stars out of 5 -- With piano-flecked soul, lite funk and reggae, EVOLVER's tunes and arrangements are as impeccable as the cut of Legend's suits.

Good cd

Created: 10/11/08
The former John Stephens flits through rap, reggae, club grooves, guitar-led singer-songwriting and generic pop anthems, with an oversmooth Eighties sheen and sentimental, loved-up lyrics that take him dangerously close to a sloppy, drossy territory.
That is John's problem: his contemporary soul, lovely though its melodies are, suggests facility rather than passion, skill instead of instinct.
His new album remains earthbound.
He lends some old school soul sophistication to the R&B scene, but often seems to promise more than he delivers.
His third album, filled with big name guests, such as Kanye West, Will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas and Andre 3000 of Outkast, because he can, is a case in point - laid-back, confident, diverse... and a little disappointing.
"Good Morning" is a standard smoochy wake-up call, "This Time" could easily be farmed out to a boy band without seeming any less vacuous, while "If You're Out There's "inspirational" lyrics amount to no more than a string of clichés.
And this with mandatory gospel choir.
The blithe reggae track "No Other Love", the Estelle duet, is enjoyable and sultry enough. At least his new protégé, Estelle, gets to return the favour.
"References to "change", "destiny" and "the future" abound; the arrival, midway through, of surging chorales is reassuringly inevitable, as are the crashing power chords.
It is a little corny, but don't be surprised if you too get swept up in its grandeur on....November 4".-A.Macpherson
As on Legend's previous two efforts, his balladry can tend towards banality, and bland slow jams such as "Cross the Line" prove unmemorable.
"We suspect Legend aspires to be a modern Stevie Wonder or Marvin Gaye. He has ended up as the 21st-century Lionel Richie".- Dan Cairns
But the innate warmth of John's voice mostly carries his material.
Highlights: "Green Light", "It's Over" and "No Other Love".

I have to say that I am a die hard J. Legend fan, but it took me a few days to really get into this album. I feel like on this album J took more risks and tried to switch up his style a little bit. Out all of my favorites, I would have to say Quickly featuring Brandy, This Time and Everyone Knows are songs that all his listeners will appreciate.

i love him so much,i simply have no words to describe this man's music. he is more than fantastic, to call him outstanding is an insult! i am so in love with john's music. every song he makes turns to gold. if i only had the chance to meet him, sing with him, do a collab with him and have him teach me the piano. i wish that he and alicia keys could do a collaboration... Read more. now that would be magical. there is something about him when he sits in fron of that piano, history and magic is created. i love you john legend!! keep it up! u have a fan 4 eternity!
