Movie synopsis

Following closely on the heels of Stanley Kubrik's DR. STRANGELOVE (all too closely for Kubrick and company, who quickly filed a lawsuit alleging plagiarism), Sidney Lumet's FAIL-SAFE employs a similarly stylized and heightened dramatic structure in its nerve-crushing moral tale. Taking place over the course of a single day, the film follows government and army officials in Nebraska, New York City, and Washington, D.C., as they go about their day supervising, examining, and speculating on the fragile state of affairs engendered by the tense nuclear standoff between the U.S. and Russia. When an off-course commercial airplane triggers the Pentagon's complex "fail-safe" maneuver, leaving an arsenal of nuclear-bomb-carrying jet fighters at the ready, a mechanical error puts the entire world in danger of destruction. Riveting performances from a rich cast are pushed even further by Lumet's stark and ominous direction. Walter Matthau gives an uncharacteristic turn as a cold and contemptuous political scientist unswerving in his convictions that the U.S. must stand strong against the communist menace. Henry Fonda plays the American president who must navigate the complex and urgent political trauma and prevent total destruction, even at an unthinkable price.

Editorial reviews

"...[Frears] makes a sterling job of reviving the original film's taut, monochrome claustrophobia. A compelling exercise in human drama..."

THE 'ORIGINAL' IS STILL THE BEST

Created: 04/11/09
In a previous review, I racked George Clooney over the hot coals over his HIGHLY INFERIOR version of "FAIL-SAFE", being a WATSE OF TALENT and RESOURCES in trying to remake a classic.

Now, see for yourself !!!!

Told somewhat in 'REAL TIME', this nerve-racking scenario is at once plausible; though assurances are carefully offered that "a system of SAFEGAURDS exists that would prevent a happening from ever occuring."

All the same, we watch the story unfold with concern and horror, as the U.S. president is made helpless by rules and technology, as he tries to recall a flight of nuclear bombers on the way to bomb Russia, and being forced to make
a fateful decision to prevent WWIII.

Part of Hollywood's fascination with 'political noir' during the mid-1960's,
this movie was so good that the producers of the rival film 'DR STRANGELOVE...'
sued to prevent its initial release !!!

BTW, one should wonder why star Henry Fonda seem to be in almost all of these movies.

Anyway, 'OLD SCHOOL is still GOOD SCHOOL' !!!!

I hope you agree !!!!

Fail Safe

I love this movie because it takes the scheme put forth humorously by Stanely Kubrick in Dr. Strangelove and treats it with the gravity I feel it deserves. Henry Fonda, Walter Matthau, Larry Hagman are some of the cast starring in this film. I believe that the movie does a good job capturing the tension that underlied the Cold War and the gravity of trying to work with the USSR to stop a nuclear bomber headed for Moscow which was deployed by accident.

The realism of nuclear terror

Created: 10/11/06
This is a starkly simple film. As the title suggests, it is concerned with possible results if nuclear systems fail. When an unidentified aircraft triggers an alert at Strategic Defense Headquarters, a series of consequences are automatically set in motion. So rigid are the security procedures that a scenario emerges where humans can no longer control the sophisticated machinery that they have created.

Whilst Sidney Lumet's version bears many similarities to the more esoteric "Dr Strangelove", the ultimate dilemma confronting the President (Henry Fonda) is totally original - as is the Presisdent's solution.

Above all, the film succeeds in capturing the enormity of the nuclear decision. Despite the most sophisticated systems, humans are ultimately called on make choices of monumental importance based on old-fashioned criteria such as diplomacy and trust. When the stakes are that high, the nature of those choices is beyond comprehension.

Fail-Safe

Excellent movie about cold war tensions when a group of America attack bombers with nuclear weapons are accidently given the order to attack Moscow. When they are finally reached by radio they have already passed their Fail-Safe point and where trained to ignore any verbal order in case it was a trick by the enemy. The Americans and Soviets then combine forces in an attempt to destroy the planes before World War III starts. Power house cast for its time.

Be Prepared

Before the movie Wargames came Fail Safe. It is a story of incredible tension and suspense. The cast of characters is fantastic, too many great actors to mention here. This film really will make you wonder about how safe we are from our own destruction.
