    Movie synopsis

This double feature offers two inspired pairings of shockmeister Roger Corman and the quintessentially sinister Vincent Price in moody adaptations of the short stories of Edgar Allan Poe. In THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER, hopeful Phillip (Mark Damon) rides up to the crumbling Usher estate to pick up his betrothed, Madeline (Myrna Fahey), and is coldly received by her brother, Roderick (Price). A most unwilling host, Roderick suffers from "morbid acuteness of the senses" and is convinced their family lineage--and the very house itself--is cursed by the evil deeds of their forebears. He is sworn to do everything in his power to keep his sister from leaving with Phillip--even burying her alive--to stop her from continuing their damned lineage. "King of the Bs" Corman got permission from his producers to make this, his first film in color and with a recognizable star, for the same price as two of his usual black-and-white films. The result was a smash hit with critics and audiences, and Corman made seven more. This is still one of the best, with a comparatively restrained performance by Price, good set design and photography, and eerie music by the legendary Les Baxter.THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM (1961) takes place in 16th-century Spain with Francis Bonnard (John Kerr) visiting the gloomy castle of his late sister's husband, Nicholas (Price), in order to discern the reason for her death. It seems Nicholas is terrified that wife Elizabeth (Barbara Steele) is not really dead and that her spirit wanders the halls at night. It turns out Nicholas' father was a feared leader of the Spanish Inquisition, and as a child he saw him torture his mother and then bury her alive. He's now convinced Elizabeth has suffered a similar fate, even though his doctor (Antony Carbone) disagrees. Meanwhile, his father's torture chamber is still down in the basement, just waiting to get back into service. There are twisted twists and gristly surprises aplenty in this second of the Poe adaptations, which benefits from nice costumes, atmospheric cinematography, a mournfully eerie score by Baxter, the presence of European horror star Steele, and Price at his most floridly hammy.

    Edgar Allen Poe Double Feature!

    Created: 01/08/06
This is an awesome Edgar Allen Poe double feature.
The Pit & The Pendulum has always been my favorite Vincent Price movie. A man arrives at the castle demanding to see his sister, but is told by both her husband & her doctor that she died a mysterious death. Price plays the part of the husband, and claims that his father was insane & killed his mother when he caught her cheating with his brother. This was done in his torture chamber in the basement where the bodies remained. Little by little, Price becomes posessed by his late father, and ... well, you'll just have to watch the movie to enjoy the twist at the end.
In tacky 60's style, The Fall of the House of Usher is about a desperate man who visits his fiance at her spooky home with her crazy brother (Vincent Price) who won't let the couple be together due to the strange family illness which claimed the lives of all other Usher relatives who were, of course, buried in the basement.
These are both excellent movies, but I rated them GOOD due to bad acting, which actually give the old movies their sense of character.

You've gotta love the Vincent Price/Roger Corman/Edgar Allan Poe combination; if you're a horror fan, it's a recipe for pure delight! This DVD set is one of the best double features I've seen from this entertaining group. In the first feature, the House of Usher isn't what I'd call an inviting place. I mean, the surrounding countryside alone would make me back the truck up---and the house itself? Forget it! G'bye! And of course Vincent Price plays his part perfectly; he exudes an air of tortured menace that you could cut with a knife. In fact, everyone in this movie is very good. VERY. I watched this one twice and for me that's saying something. I won't give away the ending, but let's just say things are not what they appear to be in The House of Usher. The second feature is "The Pit and the Pendulum." I liked this one too, and once again Vincent plays his role to perfection. He just seems to have a knack for playing someone that's a couple beers short of a six-pack. And the special effects in this one are very well done for a so-called "B" movie...I especially liked the authenticity of the pendulum as it inexorably descends toward...well, you'll see. All I can say is you won't be disappointed by these two offerings. As Mr. Alice Cooper once said: Welcome to my Nightmare...I think you're gonna like it!

The Fall of the House of Usher

this movie is one of the forgotton classics that was great in its own little way. it was under budgeted and had at least one well known actor, Vincent Price. To have him in this movie makes it just that much better. The DVD also has The Pit and The Pendulum with it. these two movies, both cinematic versions of the short stories written by Edgar Allen Poe.
