The Fall of the Roman Empire (DVD, 2008, 3-Disc Set, Limited Collector's Edition)

Anthony Mann, Stephen Boyd, Alec Guinness|Theatrical release: 1964 | Rating: Not Rated

Movie synopsis

The success of Anthony Mann's wide-screen epic El Cid (1961) led to this even grander undertaking, one of Hollywood's periodic infatuations with the decadence of Imperial Rome. After murdering his father, Emperor Marcus Aurelius Commodus drifts into a life of wanton depravity as the Gothic hordes gather at the Empire's borders. THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE is a Hollywood spectacular in the grand tradition, but Mann manages to elicit some terrific performances amongst the mob scenes. According to the trailer, the film contains "Not just 3 or 4, but ALL of the known emotions!"

For those who are in the mood for Ancient Rome, this along with "Ben-Hur", "Spartacus", and "The Robe", were the way to do it before digital special effects.

Sophia Loren is not as ravishing as she was in "El Cid", and Stephen Boyd redeems his villian role in "Ben-Hur". There is a great supporting cast, another great chariot race(although not on a par with "Ben-Hur's".

The 3-disk set is really nice, as are all the special features, which include a reproduction of the original 1964 Souvenir Program and 6 color production stills. It comes in an odd, but nice box(which I use for something else as it doesn't really sit well with other DVD cases).

Americans made great Romans, as well as being the British in India, and this certainly set a quality standard. "Gladiator" has a similar theme about the Romans in Gaul, as does "The Last Legion", which has a similar "fall of Rome" theme. With popcorn it's a great epic.

The fall of the roman empire DVD BOX

Created: 06/05/10
Cordialement.
Jan Massera
