Movie synopsis

STAR WARS zealots, rejoice, for thy movie is at hand: an odyssey across America with a van full of hardcore science-fiction-loving geeks that drop STAR WARS quotes at the drop of a vintage collector's-item Darth Vader helmet. Their mission: to infiltrate Skywalker ranch--or die trying--and heist a pre-release print of THE PHANTOM MENACE. With stops along the way for bad internet dates and general misbehavior (as well as some drama concerning one of the fanboys dying of cancer), their mission becomes a whole STAR WARS-style adventure in itself, their van doubling for the Millennium Falcon plunging through the outer space of the Midwest. There's sci-fi-convention-collectible eye candy, surreal car chases, and moments from the STAR WARS films (such as the trash compactor scene) recreated with loving detail. Dan Fogler (BALLS OF FURY) supplies the hairy guy momentum and Kristen Bell (FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL) is surprisingly funny as the requisite way-out-of-their-league hot chick, who just happens to love STAR WARS too (those lucky nerds). The hilarious Seth Rogen shows up in several mangy roles, and there are cameos by Billy Dee Williams (as Judge Reinhold), Carrie Fisher, Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes, Boba Fett, Darth Maul, an actor playing a kung fu version of Aint it Cool's Harry Knowles, and even William Shatner. Kevin Spacey was one of the film's producers.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"FANBOYS sports a clever and knowing screenplay steeped in Galactic Empire minutiae....The script and general approach are non-condescending and often, very funny."
Box Office - Mark Keizer (01/23/2009)

"There are enough good jokes in FANBOYS, a road comedy about geeks on a STAR WARS-related quest, to satisfy hard-core fans of that George Lucas franchise."
New York Times - Neil Genzlinger (02/06/2009)

3 stars out of 5 -- "FANBOY surfs sweetly along on a wave of in-jokes, lively support turns and good-natured goofiness."
Total Film - Rob James (11/01/2010)

After all the hype, all the reshoots, all the pushed back release dates...it is finally here: "Fanboys" on DVD. Chances are you saw the trailer for it, and chances are you saw the posters at theatres, and chances are you saw the Myspace homepage "Fanboys" layout a year ago when it was supposed to be released across American cinemas. Or maybe it was so long ago in a galaxy far, far away you forgot already? It's throw away theatrical release a month before the DVD release did it no justice, so here we are living the glory on the small screen. And frankly, it was all worth it.

"Fanboys" takes place in a world not long ago, 1998 to be exact, before the release of famed "Episode I" in the Star Wars saga where 4 friends set out to steal a copy, or atleast view it, from "Skywalker Ranch" before thier friend subdues to cancer. We have part road trip, part nostalgic indulgence, but all fun for fans of Star Wars, Star Trek, and anyone in the "Judd Apatow" comedy fad. We have cameos from Billy Dee Williams, Carrie Fisher, Ray Park, Seth Rogen, William Shatner ("I'm William Shatner, I can score anything. ANYTHING."), and even the Greatest American Hero himself (but only in deleted scenes). "Fanboys" is frankly a fun time made by guys who truly love, and lived, the cultural impact the Star Wars films had on 70s youth.

I grew up loving Star Wars, so all the jokes and gags are instantly a hit with me because I actually know who Luke Skywalker's navigator in the Hoth battle was (it was Dax). Two characters in fact nearly brawl over the arguement that "Luke liked Leia", which is rather comical because they are genuinely aggressive in their conviction. "Fanboys" works because it has the ability to poke fun at it's very subject matter but still be respectful and realize that for many people these are genuine hobbies that bring a lot of people happiness, and because it's not condescending or insulting about it I found myself laughing at them while still holding my intrigue.

If anything to complain over it's the parched features on the disc. The deleted scenes are priceless (just to see William Katt) but the rest of the "features" are glorified "pats on the back" and publicity features. The commentary is fun though, dull at times, but holds the entertainment well. Just didn't seem justifiable, I would have liked to perhaps had both versions of the film (cancer vs non-cancer versions), or maybe a nice feature describing the hardships the film went through because it's difficulties were no secret to anyone with a computer or Entertainment Weekly subscription.

"Fanboys" brings happiness to me because I've been waiting 2 years for it, and here it finally is, and frankly it was what I'd hoped. However, I see this kind of humor abandoned, and then I see "Epic Movie" getting full studio backing, and I just hang my head. I can easily recomend "Fanboys". It helps to be a fan of Star Wars/Trek because much of the humor will be amplified, but even with a passing social knowledge I'm sure many of the jokes will still be accessible to even the most passive film viewer. Get your sabers, "Fanboys" will be a fun ride.

Fanboys the movie...Five starz!!!

The reason why I bought this movie was because I grew up to Star Wars..I mean I had the bedroom set from the sheets to the comforter to the action figures, sleeping bag, lunch box, etc..I really like the movie the first time I rented it because it brought me back to the days of hanging out with my friends and doing stupid stuff I guess you can say just being a kid..plus the fact that I grew up in Northern California where the Lucas Ranch is located, so to see them travel across country in the movie was pretty cool to see what some people will do to get a glimpse of the Ranch...another thing that I liked was the cast of the movie there was alot of familiar actors in it which I thought was great..overall movie to me was a 8 out of 10..I would recommend this movie to people who love Star Wars...

Any die-hard Star Wars fan has to appreciate this movie. The characters live out what true fans can only dream about doing. The featured cast does an outstanding job and it is hard to find fault in their performances. The sci-fi A-list of cameo appearances is unbelievable. It is amazing that the creators of the film got as many memorable actors as they did. If you were disappointed that Lucas never made an episode VII, than get this movie. It fills the gap as well as any movie ever could.

this movie is not to be watched if you are expecting an award winner. if you are a star wars/ george lucas fan, this is a movie you need to add to your collection. virtually every aspect of fanboys is either an allusion to star wars, or a reference to the ongoing battle between star wars fans vs. star trek fans. as i said, if you like star wars, and have a sense of humor, buy this dvd.
