Album Notes
Pantera: Philip Anselmo (vocals); Dimebag Darrel (guitar); Rex (bass); Vinnie Paul (drums).Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee."I'm Broken" was nominated for Best Metal Performance in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards.Personnel: Phil Anselmo (vocals); Diamond Darrell (guitar); Vinnie Paul (drums).Recording information: Nashville, TN.Not since the last asteroid collision with planet Earth untold eons ago has there been a apocalyptic event to equal the musical Krakatoa that is Pantera's FAR BEYOND DRIVEN. Walking a stylistic line somewhere between the melodious crunch pop of Metallica and the punkish thrashorama of Helmet, Pantera channels their raging energy into songs that function as aural letterbombs from hell--designed to detonate in your face. Never have records quite as rude as FAR BEYOND DRIVEN (or Nine Inch Nail's THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL) broken out at #1 on the Top 200 of Billboard's pop charts. There must be a reason.Immerse yourself in the first single off of FAR BEYOND DRIVEN, the thrashing "I'm Broken," and you'll get a good idea as to the method behind Pantera's madness--and what makes them such trendsetters in the thermonuclear epoch after heavy metal, speed metal and thrash have run their course. The arrangement opens with a classic Led Zeppelin rifforama (almost a blues figure); then they ride along on a single chord over an odd, slightly spastic rhythm figure a la Helmet; finally they allow these conflicting notions of noize to collide in hyperspace, setting the stage for a pithy, pulverizing guitar orgasm by Dimebag Darrell that is blissfully melodic, almost in spite of itself.Or check out "Use My Third Arm," a terrifying journey into the world of police brutality. Vocalist Phillip Anselmo froths and rants like an enraged Electrolux, sucking in noise and spewing out hostility over Dimebag's jittery power-riffs. Drummer Vinnie Paul turns popular rhythm conventions on their head, letting the bass and guitar carry the carnage while choosing to spray short bursts of small arms fire in an arrhythmic fury like a deranged dixieland drummer. When Pantera finally tucks us all in with an affectionate cover of Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan," it's as if they're trying to recollect a romantic folk song from some bygone era. As for the rest of FAR BEYOND DRIVEN...well, you want heavy--this is heavy.

Editorial Reviews
...Like great techno, it's utterly flawless music, free of any error, minimal and animal enough to make a screaming bloody mess of the head...
Melody Maker (19940402)

...If you're burned out on raging young men spewing aggression atop jackhammering drums and grinding guitars, then pass on Pantera. But if you've still got a yen for that sort of fare, than you can't do much better than this slab of metallic mayhem.... - Rating: B+

3 1/2 Stars - ...a kind of aesthetics of thud...the real art smolders in the noise itself...

Pantera still lives

Created: 30/09/07
Man, I still can’t believe that someone shot Dimebag…WTF?

This was always my favorite Pantera album. They are all my favorite in one way or another, but Far Beyond Driven just seem to blend all of their best elements perfectly. Just like at the end of the Vulgar Video when Phil says the next Pantera cd is going to be hard, abrasive and it’s going to make you go, “ what is wrong with those people”?

As many other reviewers mentioned this is the only Metal album to reach number one of the charts and that in itself is an amazing feat reached in my opinion. No other album that comes so close to being death metal has reached that peak yet.

Far Beyond Driven is pure unadulterated Pantera from start to finish. The album kicks off with one of the best cd openers that I’ve ever heard Strength Beyond Strength! This song gets the ass kicking and taking down names off to a very heavy and brutal start. I love the break down in the middle of the song, they manage to make it sound heavy as all hell.
Becoming has the now classic Vinnie Paul double kick and Phil’s classic lyrics…just read the lyrics to that song and you’ll know what I’m talking about.
The next 2 are a classic pair that they made videos for and they both feature Dime’s skillful guitar riffs and solos. Everyone knows these tracks!
The only song that I skip is number 5 but I think that that track is just a joke anyway.
Hard Lines and Sunken Cheeks has an epic feel to it and check out Dime’s guitar solo on that track.
Slaughtered attacks Christianity head on and they do an awesome job on it. This is what Pantera was all about, aggression,…to sum it up…it’s a Vulgar Display Of Power! Haha!
25 years and Shedding Skin have some of my most favorite lyrics that Phil has ever written and are another pair of excellent songs.
The next 2 tracks feature more of the signature FBD style which I love.
The album closer is a Black Sabbath cover that just somehow ends the album perfectly
Check out the video for it on shrooms…trippy!!!

Dimebag and Pantera are sorely missed by me and thousands of others. The last song always makes me sad b/c their will never be another Pantera album. But, listen and enjoy what these metal masters created while they were together! Dimebag may be gone from this plane of existence but he lives on thru the Pantera albums. Hail Dime and Pantera, hope to see you on the other side.

5 Minutes Alone is enough to make this a classic, the Planet Caravan cover is one the best covers ever recorded and the rest is just great solid in your face metal. Must own this and all Pantera if your a metalhead, Dimebag's the riff master and proves it over and over here...RIP.

Great Album

Created: 21/01/10
Pantera is a heavy metal icon. Far Beyond Driven is seen as one of their best albums, if not the best album from this well known thrash band. The vocal, and guitar is phenomenal. Nothing in particular is bad about this CD. All around this is one of the best heavy metal albums ever to be released, showing the skills and expertise of the late "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, who passed away in 2004. If you're a fan.. this is a must have.

True Texas Metal!

What an album to get your blood pumping and heart racing! With a few albums before their Major release, "Cowboys from Hell", this Cd, third major album down the road, starts off with Strength beyond Strength, a fast paced in your face song. They have grooves, jams, and moshing tunes all with the shreds included. Pantera and mostly Dimebag will be remembered through their music, and you won't forget this release, get Far Beyond Driven!

Probably the best album from Pantera

Created: 02/03/08
This was my first Pantera record. It starts ot with "Stronger Than All" which at once speaks of leglizing dope, while at the same time mentioning that they make a fortune off your pristine streets(i.e. Squeaky Clean Leave it to Beaver-Burbia.) "Becoming" is an excellent psychological study for the way unhealed pain added to delusion results in violence.(Learn that lesson well before its too late.) "5 Minutes Alone" is a standard @$$-kicker. "Broken" is about how birth and social status are not guarentee of purity, or safety. Porbably my two other fav's are "Shedding Skin", and "Rejection".(Hope that's the name.) "Shedding Skin" is about the end of a relationship, and the pealing apart of a couple's cumulative identity. "Rejection" is about just what it says. I cannot recommend this album enough. It is wonderful stress relief.
