Fearless Vampire Killers Or: Pardon Me, But Your Teeth Are in My Neck (DVD, 2004)

Roman Polanski, Jack MacGowran|Theatrical release: 1967 | Rating: Not Rated

Movie synopsis

Following the success of REPULSION, THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS was Roman Polanski's first big-budget film, a noticeably more upscale and lavish production than any of his previous offerings. Professor Ambronsius (Jack MacGowran), an eccentric old academic specializing in the study of bats, and his bumbling but well-meaning assistant, Alfred (brilliantly played by Polanski himself), travel to a small village in snowbound Transylvania (actually, filming took place in the Italian Alps) that has been plagued by a clan of local vampires. After innkeeper Shagal's comely daughter, Sarah (Sharon Tate), is abducted by Count Von Krolock (Ferdy Mayne), Ambronsius and Alfred venture out to the count's castle to rid the area of its bloodsucking parasites once and for all--a dangerous undertaking indeed, especially since it soon becomes apparent that traditional weapons against the undead are not quite as effective as folklore would have one believe and that attractive young maidens are not the only ones in danger of becoming victims of a vampire' uninvited advances. One of Polanski's most impressive achievements in FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS is presenting viewers with a perfectly executed horror-parody while at the same time maintaining a consistent underlying sense of dread.

I first discovered this movie on late-night TV show and never forgot it. It was purchased on VHS as soon as it became available years later; I once overheard another fan asking if it would ever become available on VHS. Well, now that it is also available on DVD, I wanted a copy for my collection. It is a classic comedy. My favorite scene is the ballroom with mirrors reflecting the "vampire killers" and the vampires. Remember. vampires can't be seen in mirrors. Oops! The promenade didn't last long. It is also a treat to see Sharon Tate in one of her few roles available.

I remember this movie growing up, though it was hard to catch on TV. It was a family classic that we enjoyed watching every time it was on. Wore out my VHS copy, glad it's finally on DVD. The ballroom scene & the scene where the good guys & the hunchback are sliding down the hill in the snow by different methods are just a couple of the best moments. Great cult classic, campy & fun. Hard to find a movie that is both menacing & hilarious at the same time. Also enjoyed Sharon Tate's performance. Love it. If you know someone who likes old monster movies, it's a must see. Introduce your kids to it & start your own family tradition.

I was thinking about all the old vampire movies I have seen in the last 30 years and this one came to mind. I still enjoyed it after all these years. Sharon Tate was such a beautiful woman and the world misses her still. Roman Polanski is such a good actor and very funny in this flick. I am so glad I found it and can view it whenever I want to.

Quite a slow moving movie, but weird and goofy. This is great fodder for cult movie enthusiasts who like to make comments during the movie. It has moments of great black humour--like during the vampire ball when only the people trying to be disguised as vampires have a reflection in the huge mirrors that line the crowded ballroom. I bought it because I like to have "cult movie" nights with my friends. (It's not that easy to find!)
