Fire and Ice/Frazetta: Painting with Fire (DVD, 2005, 2-Disc Set, Limited Edition)

Ralph Bakshi, Lance Laspina|Theatrical release: 1983 | Rating: Not Rated

Movie synopsis

Celebrated sword-and-sorcery artist Frank Frazetta teams up with animation director Ralph Bakshi for this high-energy animated fantasy. It's a prehistoric battle of the elements as the dissolute ruler of the Ice World, Nekron (Sean Hannon), starts a war against the fire people using a massive, advancing glacier and armies of subhuman monsters as his weapons. When he arranges to have the fire king's shapely daughter, Teegra (Cynthia Lenke), kidnapped, the adventure begins as she escapes her captors and hooks up with Lorn (Randy Norton), lone survivor of an earlier skirmish. With the aid of a mysterious dark warrior (based on Frazetta's famous painting "The Death Dealer"), Lorn and Teegra fight the armies of Nekron as well as giant monsters, lesbian sorcerers, and other comic book delights. A thunderous classical score by William Kraft adds excitement to this violent, sexy, fast-moving film. It also benefits from unusual animation techniques that nicely complement the far-out imaginations of Frazetta, Bakshi, and screenwriters Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway., This set is comprised of two fantasy films of the "sword and scorcery" vein, FIRE AND ICE and FRAZETTA: PAINTING WITH FIRE.FIRE AND ICE: Celebrated sword-and-sorcery artist Frank Frazetta teams up with animation director Ralph Bakshi for this high-energy animated fantasy. His distinctive style has virtually defined fantasy art for a decade, but Franzetta's stature is made even more grandiose by the fact that it was attained while he was suffering from an undiagnosed thyroid condition. Moreover, six strokes forced the artist to switch his drawing hand from right to left, a setback he overcame as well. The film features appearances by Bo Derek, Glenn Danzig, Ralph Bakshi, and Forrest Ackerman, among others.

On Fire with Greatness

Created: 10/09/06
This item is a great buy for fans of fantasy art and cinema. For Bakshi fans, a great copy of his last work of any significance. For Frazetta fans, a great overview of his contributions and career, plus a digital library of many of his great works. For fans of both, this collection is a sure fire success.
The producers of the 'Painting with Fire' disc of the set went to great lengths to achieve some rather impressive animation with some of Frank's more famous paintings. The opening sequence of Frazetta's famous Conan painting coming to life really made me sit up and take note. Listening to the interviews with Frank Frazetta and his family, friends and other artists (including an extended portion with Frank and Ralph Bakshi on the porch at Frank's estate, simply good stuff) is a pleasure, an intimate review of a master of his profession. When it comes to Frazetta, it doesn't get any better than this. The highs, lows and inbetweens of a man of great passion living in a time of great changes in a industry that never sits still.
'Fire and Ice' is Bakshi doing the best he can with the resources at hand. Ralph had great animators working for him, all cutting edgers trying to push the boundaries of the art at that time (Peter Chung of Aeon Flux fame worked on it), without the financial backing of a Disney. Outside of Bakshi's obligatory pinup girl rolling around on the screen scenes the film is a good (though somewhat predictable) story in a genre that, especially at the time, offered up little for fans to sink their minds into.
This set is satisfying, though I bought it for the gallery of Frank's work. After listening to the producer, Jeremy J. DiFiore, and director, Lance Laspina, commentaries I discovered the stuff I really wanted is contained on the second disc in the ,Painting with Fire, DVD set. The extended photo gallery and outtakes, riskier interviews with some of the artists and such are included in that package. Oh well, time to search eBay once again. Still, the 'Fire and Ice -Limited Edition' is a wonderful addition to your Bakshi or Frazetta collection or a fantastic introduction to either artist.

I can't get enough of Frazetta's artwork

Created: 03/03/09
This animation is one of the best fantasy animations of it's kind. Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta combined talents to create this unique fantasy study. Battling for supremacy are the domains of fire and ice. The evil leader of the ice lands, who was raised by a powerful witch, versus the virtuous leader of Fire Keep. The characters of both sides are richly rendered and the graphics are very attractive.

It's a pretty old movie, so if you're looking for state of the art graphics, such as Dreamworks level stuff, look elsewhere. However, if you appreciate the artistic style of Frank Frazetta's paintings and wish you could see his characters in motion, this film is for you.

Very well pleased

I would highly recommend this dvd to adults that like fantasy art. The artwork of Frank Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi is fantastic. It is well animated
and is a battle between good & evil. I would not recommend this to be seen
by small children since the women are scantilly clad & there are violent scenes. I am very happy with this selection.

A Great Film!

Fire and Ice: A brilliant piece of fantasy animation. Interesting plot, and action that will keep you on the edge of yor seat. If you like this type of realistic animation, you should check out Ralph Bakshi's American Pop. The story is amazing and the art makes you forget your watching animation. I only wish he would have continued on the path of these two fine films.
