Penn; David Skernick.Unknown Contributor Role: Kevin Killen.Singer-songwriter Paula Cole bares her soul on her self-produced second album, displaying even more self-confidence than on HARBINGER. There is a sense of breaking with the past, especially on tracks like "Tiger," where Cole revisits the symbolic "Bethlehem" of her first album, singing, "I've left Bethlehem and I feel free/I've left the girl I was supposed to be." Lyrically, THIS FIRE is ferocious and unrestrained, and Cole's limber voice is suitably raw and versatile, veering from whispery-soft to edgy and emotional, delivering a fearlessly personal message. When she sings, "You call me a bitch in heat/And I call you a liar" (on "Throwing Stones"), the word "liar" emerges as a furious scream. The next track, "Carmen," in contrast, is gently nostalgic. Cole's songs are emotionally complex and open to interpretation, but they are never deliberately vague, and her subtle wit saves THIS FIRE from self-absorption.

Editorial Reviews
...A feisty poet with a soaring voice and a funky groove, Cole seems to be nipping at Tori Amos' heels.

Pretty good

Never really listened to Paul Cole until I bought this album. She has a good way with words and getting you to feel her anger and emotions.
Some of her songs can be a hit or miss. It is all about personal taste.

"Feelin Love" is extremely erotic, while "I dont want to wait" is more of a known song among the teenage crowd.

Definitely worth listening to.

Want to Understand Women: Listen to this album

Created: 04/12/08
Musically, this is an excellent album, by a woman, Paula Cole, who has some hit songs (but whose nameisn't well known). "This Fire", produced in the 90's, is a tribute to woman who feel slighted by men, everywhere. In fact, if you want a short course on "Women's Issues" and why they feel the way they do--listen to this album. It is beautiful, haunting, and one of the angriest laments sung by a woman that I've heard (in fact, it left me wondering if Paula Cole is a heterosexual...anymore).
