Firefly - The Complete Series (Blu-ray Disc, 2008, 3-Disc Set, Checkpoint; Sensormatic; Widescreen)

Fox has aired some pretty amazing sci-fi shows. This is definitely one that ranks near the top. Not many people get the idea of a sci-fi western, but Joss Whedon's new genre evokes thought about the Civil War, utopia, and perspectives of what it might be like when you are not on the winning side. Add to that one of the best developments of character dynamics and it makes for some great TV. I highly recommend adding this to your Blu-ray collection.

How did I miss this series when it premiered on TV? It was my loss and now I'm very glad that I took the chance on buying this series. I'm a person who likes "Original Stories", ones that create new places, characters and new ideas. While I do love Sci-Fi, So much is just a repeat of an older idea or series. All the 'Stars' (trek, wars, gates) were great in their original conception, but the spin offs all lacked the imagination that made the base/original series so enjoyable.
The series Firefly is a whole new look on the future (wiki the name and you'll get the 'lowdown' on the series) and I admit it took me half way through the first pilot 'Serenity' to absorb what was being told to me but once I got enough of the plot to understand the 'universe' that was being described, it's been a fantastic ride since. The characters grew on me rather quickly (all of the actors whom I recognize from other great shows)and I really enjoyed the characters and their lives which were so detailed; like a new friend who you've hung out with for a year only to learn something new about what makes them the person they are today. I also like the fact that there weren't a lot of "aliens" strewn about for special effects sake. It is a human drama with characters rich and diverse; don't need a lot of fancy costumes or FX for that eh? Sadly I can say that my only disappointment in the series is that it is only one season. What an addition it would have been to have 7 seasons of this to add to my DVD/Blu library. Since there is only the one, I'll treasure it and keep it and hope one day someone gets the bright idea that this should be continued!!!

This is the absolute greatest show ever made. It pushes the envelope without being too extreme, it's very political without being in your face about it, and has the best character development I have ever seen, all in 15 episodes. It's too bad it was canceled the first season. In all reality, who can blame Fox? I mean sure, they are at fault. But this show basically goes against everything Fox stands for. Anti-government, anti-war, anti-corporation, etc. It's too bad the narrow minded Fox execs are terrible at putting bias behind them and actually giving something a chance, because I believe they completely screwed the pop culture world by letting something this good go. It seems like Fox has the best talent scouts, and the worst execs.

To those of you who don't know. Fox ran this completely out of order, skipped weeks, the shows volume was low and just completely neglected to air 3 episodes. None the less, it made the biggest impact on me that any show ever has, or probably will. Not one single episode failed to attract my FULL attention. I was glued to the TV the whole time, and still am when I watch it.

If you have watched Firefly, you know how good this series is and owe it to yourself to get it on Bluray. If you don't know Firefly, treat yourself to this amazing show.

But, I'm here to review the Bluray discs, not to sell the show. The case advertises 3 never before aired episodes. These did not air on Fox when the show was broadcast, but you have already seen them if you have watched the discs before (on Netflix or iTunes, for example).

I had seen the episodes before in regular definition and Bluray offers such a vast improvement upon that. The visuals are fantastic, as expected. More surprising to me was how much of a difference the audio made. It is so much more clear that I heard lines in every episode that I missed when viewing the regular DVD's.

This Bluray package takes a series that is wonderful because of its characters and story-telling and immerses you in their universe.

As many have said this is one of the best sci-fi series in the last 20 years. The fact that it was cancelled before the end of it's first season is simply incomprehensible. After the series was cancelled Joss Whedon did not allow the concept to die but went on to produce a major motion picture using the same cast titled "Firefly". The movie was also a terrific adventure which demonstrated where the story line could have gone had the network had the good sense not to cancel the series.
