    Publisher's Note
A comically surreal, bitingly ironic account of the Civil War as seen by three runaway slaves illuminates the political consciences of both blacks and whites through a mixture of history, fantasy, and today's political realities. Reprint.

Brilliantly portrayed by a novelist with "a talent for hyperbole and downright yarning unequaled since Mark Twin", (SATURDAY REVIEW), this slave's-eye view of the Civil War exposes America's racial foibles of the past and present with uninhibited humor and panache. "A book that reinvents the particulars of slavery in America with comic rage".--THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW.

    Not so great

    Created: 10/12/08
I read many glowing reviews of this book, but was quite disappointed. The conceit of the plot is that it shifts the events of the Civil War to modern times--or at least, certain aspects. There are discussions about television, cars, planes, etc. Lincoln is a cowardly country rube who comes south to try to get a Virginia plantation owner (who is also a jet-setter flying around with european royalty) to lend the failing Union enough money to win the war. The story is messy, confusing and seems more one mediocre writer's acid-induced dream than anything else. On the plus side, it's short--you can read the book in one sitting.
