Very Usable Format for Tying Manual
Created: 07/04/08
I am a retired H.S. teacher, teaching Beginning Fly Tying. I was looking for a "simple" book to recommend and ordered this to examine. Most fly tying manuals have step-by-step descriptions, but this one is unique, in that every page opening has complete information about a particular fly and materials list on the left page, with six detailed steps with photos on the right page. The spiral binding, while not unique, does make this format work in a wonderful way. Congratulations to the author and the publisher.
There is one slight drawback; the Briticisms, but they are more quaint than difficult. Examples are "offer up [the material] to the hook," and "cast off the head." These can be a little confusing to beginners.
All-in-all, the best manual I have seen!

A Great collection of patterns
Created: 13/08/07
The book has a great selection of patterns. One aspect that was quite helpful was the inclusion of the target species each fly was intended for, and the difficulty level of the tie itself. The recipes are laid out in a unique fashion, referenced in the color photo rather than listed. The photography is suburb and instructions are written in an easy to understand temper. The book has a distinct UK selection of flies, but is very applicable to the North American tyer as well. The spiral binding is perfect for using the book at the bench without worrying about pages flipping. My only complaint with the book would be that there were not enough steps for some of the patterns presented. This hampered efforts to tie some of the more complex patterns.
It is a good book for the beginner to intermediate tyer, and a nice reference book for the pro.
