The Fog (DVD, 2006, Unrated Edition, Widescreen Edition)

Why did "The Fog" come back?

Because it could be done better than
the original horror classic? Not even close.

This film had a few good moments,
saving it from the dreaded one star rating,
but it is greatly inferior to the original
masterpiece by John Carpenter and Debra Hill,
which I will likely watch many times in the future.
I will not watch this film again.

The good:

Some nice cinematography, for example,
the boy running from the beach
to his home with the fog in pursuit.

The images of the past crime were well done
and something not in the original,
but I would take John Houseman telling
the campfire ghost story to the children
on the beach at the beginning of the original
over this addition every time.

The bad:

The acting was amateurish and
the characters were shallow and ridiculous.
I had no sympathy for their plight.
The vengeful ghosts seemed to be doing a public service.

Showing copious amounts of too young female skin
and a sex scene that is gratuitous during
the first half of the movie is of no value
and is always a sign of a bad film in need of CPR.
Sure, Adrienne Barbeau provided some eye candy
in the original, but she had the aspect of a mature woman.

Special effects over substance. No thanks.

It is not scary;
a bad sign for a film that is supposed to be scary.

The ending which showed some promise,
was reduced to complete absurdity.

The ugly:
Well, the leprous water-logged ghosts were ugly,
and in a foul mood as well.

Why do they always come back?

I should know better than to view
the remake of a classic movie,
but because of the rare exception,
"Nosferatu" comes to mind,
it is worth giving it a chance.
(I now pledge to never watch the remake of "The Hills Have Eyes")

The original has some great acting,
with the mother-daughter duo of Janet Leigh ("Psycho"!)
and Jamie Lee Curtis (scream queen of "Halloween" fame)
and the aforementioned Ms. Barbeau and John Houseman,
and Hal Holbrook, among others.
The cinematography is beautiful.
The score by John Carpenter is one of the best.
It is tense and scary which is what we horror fans are looking for.

Check out the original,
it is great work of film art,
and skip this poor imitation,
which is not even a good film on its own merits.

Well, we all knew it was gonna happen...again. Another actor from a popular TV show goes off and does a movie while they're still hot. So far Maggie Grace from the TV show Lost is in the lead of this wretched race with the remake of "The Fog". I'll just get right down to the point. It's a bad movie. The acting is reminiscent of the old 80's horror flicks, completely unfelt, scripted and in most cases completely over acted. Most would think that's enough to ruin a movie, nope, they took it one further and apparently got the worst horror effects artist(s) they could find. There were moments where you could spot the bad make-up a mile away, where flesh and latex met, it was so obvious and laughable.

As for Maggie Grace, she's an annoying "C..U...Next...Tuesday&qu​ot; on Lost as it is, she's no better on the big screen. And again, it's only a matter of time before you start seeing the rest of the Lost cast-aways making their debut on the big screen. Who's next, Jorge "Hurley" Garcia doing a slap-stick buddy comedy with another ethnic actor? Perhaps with Harold Perrineau? (you know him as that irritating paranoid black guy who never raised his kid...yeah a real shocker there! Just kidding, turns out he actually wanted to.) Anyway, I'm off track and said more than this movie deserves. Save yourself a 10 spot and some gas, stay away from this mess.

My favorite 70's/80's horror movie has to be The Fog (1979). The cast was great, the story was great, the mood was perfect. This remake has nothing!
The cast was pretty but that's all I can say about them. The creepy mood was replaced with a slick/modern/Ikea-like quality that just reminds me of Dawson's Creek.

Backstory is the same - small coastal town centennial celebration is approaching. Thing is the town's forefathers were less than heroic when they secured their survival by murdering sick men, women and children aboard a clipper ship bound for their town. The sick people on the ship had a deal with the town officials - for a piece of the outskirt of town they would get a lot of money. The betrayed folks come back as ghosts for some long overdue revenge.

I did like the flashback to when the settlers do their thing aboard the clipper ship. That was all I liked. The ending was dumb but had potential if they had set it up better. If the settlers had actually taken the girl and then the ghosts came back for her, THEN it might have worked.

Whatever happened to adults in horror movies? I know 80's horror was mainly populated by teenagers but even in the original Fog they are all adults except for Jamie Lee Curtis as a teenage hitchhiker. Now all adults are minor character, little more than extras. they are parents of the kids that get killed or cops or the killer. They are never "just" characters that contribute anything worthwhile to the plot.

Basically - I hated it, if you like 70's/80's horror films you wil feel the same way. Do not bother renting or buying it, if someone tries to give you a copy - kindly decline.

And if you did not even know this was a remake do yourself a favor and get the original!

The first time I watched this I would have given it a 1/5 but it actually got better the second time around for some reason. Tom Welling does a great job in this but it seems the rest of the cast kinda forgot how to 'act'. I'm not sure why this was remade but the original is better considering what they had to work with. And the ending to this version is so mind numbingly stupid I can't stand it. The only thing this movie proves is that one good acting performance cannot save a movie from it's own mediocrity. Can't recommend anymore than just renting. 2.5/5

This movie is not about rewriting the genre...it is a ghost story. It keeps you interested as you ponder why the fog is seeking revenge on this town. Meanwhile you get to look at Tom Welling (who could possibly mind that?), Maggie Grace and Selma Blair. I had no problems with the acting in the film and found it an entertaining movie.
