The second season swiftly closed to a battle between Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard, with both achieving superstardom. In its third season, the variety show seemed to result in record deals for almost all of the finalists; however, it was the tough-edged, soulful voice of Fantasia Barrino that finally overwhelmed the judges.Recording simply as Fantasia, the young singer with the powerful and richly seductive style debuts with FREE YOURSELF, a collection showing off her immense range, as she tries her hand (and excels) at many different types of music. She opens with the classic, mournful soul of "Ain't Gon' Beg You," followed by back-to-back 1970s-inspired songs, the title track and "Truth Is." Fantasia has certainly mastered the treat-me-right R&B ballad, but she also shows a different side on her traditional rendition of the jazz standard "Summertime." On the other end of the spectrum, she doesn't slip when served with a Jazze Pha hip-hop background on "Don't Act Right." To win AMERICAN IDOL, Fantasia had to be proficient in many genres, and FREE YOURSELF reveals her victory to be no fluke.

Free Yourself - Fantasia (DC 2004)

Created: 06/01/07
I purchased the CD becuase I feel in love with her voice on American Idol. I loved only a couple of songs on the CD and they were the ones that either were written for her at the end of the show or Summertime, the one she put so much passion in on the show. I still love her voice and the soulfulness of it. Most of the songs were neither passionate or thought provoking. I'll probably put only two to three songs on my i-pod and then sell it again. A little disappointing to say the very least. She still has one of the best voices I have heard in a long time but needs to get better songs written for her so she can pour her heart into it.

Best CD I've Bought In Years

Created: 27/01/07
...and I buy a lot of music! Have played it non-stop for the last two years! The CD is the story of a young womans struggles with love and life and garnered 4 Grammy nominations. Unheard of for an artist's debut CD! Any negative comments would have to be racially motivated as this young lady is a living legend! And if you say you don't like R&B you're speaking in generalities and that is ignornant! There would have been no Elvis Presley had there not been such great soul and blues musci coming before! If you think you know her but haven't listened to her, you're only cheating yourself!

This is actually my second copy of this Cd. I had to replace my od one because as a true Cd collector and music lover my collection just wasn't the same without this powerhouse vocalist. This is definately R&B at it's best!!1
