Movie synopsis

Based on the best-selling book by H.G. Bissinger, Peter Berg's gritty, powerful drama tells the true story of a small Texas town in which high school football is the only thing that matters. Set in 1988, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS opens on the first day of practice for the Odessa Permian Panthers. Under intense pressure and scrutiny from the town's residents, head coach Gary Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton) nonetheless maintains a calm façade. His star player, Boobie Miles (Derek Luke), is a running back with unlimited potential, but the rest of the team is undersized and lacking killer instinct--especially quarterback Mike Winchell (Lucas Black), who's shy and short of confidence, and Don Billingsley (Garrett Hedlund), who is tormented by his father (Tim McGraw) for being too soft. When Boobie goes down on opening day with a career threatening knee injury, the season appears to be over. But Gaines won't give up, and neither will the rest of his feisty players.Billy Bob Thornton delivers another outstanding performance in Berg's impassioned drama, as do the film's young actors (most notably Luke, Black, and Hedlund). Tobias Schliessler's fuel-injected photography and Explosion in the Sky's electrifying score make FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS an even more spectacular movie-going experience.

"The FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS team has invested a lot of energy in the authenticity of the on-field action that dominates the film."

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS (2005, DVD

Created: 06/06/07
I bought the Friday Night Lights (2005, DVD because it was based on a true-life story about a high school football team. I loved the way Tim McGraw played a father who was so out of character with the type of father he is in real life. I had never heard of Boobie Miles before; but Derrick Luke made him real to me. His caretaker-relative took a lot of pride in Boobie's performances on the football field and seemed to feel his pain when Boobie suffered injuries. In spite of his injuries on the football field, he was able to pick up the pieces of his life and move forward. Billy Bob Thornton was absolutely terrific as the tough yet patient and loving head football coach. He not only demanded the best of individual players but also taught them to care for one another even if they did not win every game. I also like Billy Bob as a husband to his adorable wife who supported him in his chosen field.
Finally, I rented this DVD prior to buying it. Even though I do not consider myself a football fan, I have watched this movie many times and have not grown tired of it.

Friday Night Boredom

I bought this because I grew up in West Texas where the story is set and because it got good reviews on Interned Movie Database. The movie is really not that great. What other people see in it I don't know. It goes from one football game to another. The games do not come off as that exciting. The main final climatic game is a big let down.
