    Synopsis
Evelyn Couch, a dissatisfied housewife becomes friends with an old woman, Ninny Threadgoode, while visiting her mother-in-law at a nursing home. Threadgoode tells the story of two women, tomboy Idgie and beautiful Ruth, and the small town café they ran together during the depression. The Whistle Stop Café become a haven for the poor, colored people, and abused women like Ruth herself. Inspired by stories of Ruth and Idgie facing off against the Ku Klux Klan and the local sheriff, Evelyn finds herself making empowering changes in her own life. In 1991 Fannie Flagg's beloved bestseller was made into a film, FRIED GREEN TOMATOES, starring Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy.

The Whistle Stop Cafe - 20's life in Alabama

Fanny Flagg's wit and humor are personified in her characters in Fried Green Tomatoes. The reader will have no trouble at all sympathizing and downright loving Idgy Threadgoode, her pal Ruth, and everyone who lived in and around
Whistle Stop, Alabama. The movie was good, the book even better (they always are!).

Funny and sad all rolled up together!

    Created: 24/07/06
Idgy is a fun tomboyish character that you will learn to love immediately. Her friend Ruth is just as lovable but opposite in personality. Ruth is dainty and feminine.

The book explores more of the characters personalities and history than the movie (which i also love) does. I learned alot about the south in the early part of the centry. The general attitude toward blacks and the poverty they lived in.

Idgy is loveable for many reasons, but her devotion towards her 'colored' friends whome she treats as family is endearing and a true character strength.

Overall i recommend the book, great read for book clubs as a lengthy discussion on characters and their motives can be had. A+ book.

MORE THAN THE MOVIE TO LOVE

    Created: 07/01/08
This book gives you the best of the movie and alot more added memories and different situations .Some people who love the movie as is might not like the changes but i did and enjoyed knowing what happened after the movie . It continues with the lives of Iggy , and the other lives to marriage and some death , and lets you know Iggy was still out there giving away honey as a bee charmer and telling her wild stories so look into this book for more of Fried Green Tomamtoes

    Excellent book!

    Created: 03/04/09
This book was so entertaining. I bought it because I saw the movie years ago and I love to compare books and movies. I just recently bought the movie too so that I can watch it again and compare. The book made me feel like I was right there in Whistle Stop and I didn't want it to end.
