Album Notes
Silverchair: Daniel Johns (vocals, guitar); Chris Joannou (bass); Ben Gillies (drums).Personnel: Daniel Johns (vocals, guitar); Ben Gillies (drums).Audio Mixer: Kevin Shirley.Recording information: Festival Studios.Illustrator: Greg Bennett.Photographers: Dave Anderson; John Watson ; Adrienne Overall; Susan Robertson.Forget the fact that two-thirds of Silverchair will be in their teens 'til the year 2000; the band's debut, FROGSTOMP, spills with full-throttled guitar angst worthy of bands twice their age.Having won a record contract through a contest in their hometown of Newcastle, Australia, the band recorded FROGSTOMP in less than two weeks, and the album entered the Australian charts at number one, a down-under first. It's easy to see why: gripping guitar structures, reminiscent of hard-rock antecedents from Black Sabbath to Dinosaur Jr., support howled vignettes of adolescent frustration. "Leave Me Out" has the same head-nodding lurch as the best Sabbath riffs, and song titles like "Suicidal Dream," "Pure Massacre" and "Madman" bring the whole freak-out theme home. "Cicada" drives the youth point further, with singer/guitarist Daniel Johns realizing that "growing old is like a Civil War."Silverchair has done its homework well. FROGSTOMP is an aggresive debut for a band that makes up for their lack of age with impressive musical chops.

Editorial Reviews
...Pearl Jam's melodic uplift and Helmet's amp-taxing intensity....masters of sonic sculpture, deftly using feedback and distortion to build vast cathedrals of sound out of their barrel-chord riffs and lean catchy choruses. Yet that towering rarely overshadows the music's emotional content...

3 stars out of 5 - ...Alarmingly precocious...

An Average Performance from Silverchair

Created: 18/08/06
Silverchair found their popularity soar in the early 90s when grunge was peak. This particular album is hit and miss as far as quality music goes.
Overall not a bad record, but not one of the best. I give it a 3 out of 5.

Song review:

Isreal's Song 3 out of 5 - An interesting slow jam. Some vocals are slightly out of tune.

Tomorrow 4 out of 5 - Very melodic but nothing really original about the song.

Faultline 3 out of 5 - A quality song, but very reminisent of early Alice in Chains

Pure Massacre 5 out of 5 - A grunge masterpiece. This song really captures the disillusion that made grunge so popular.

Shade 4 out of 5 - The only problem with this song is again the vocals are a bit pitchy.

Leave Me Out 1 out of 5 - Not a very well constructed song. The guitar riff sounds a lot like early Black Sabbath. There is nothing original about this song.

Suicidal Dream 3 out of 5 - This song is overall ok, but nothing really spectacular

Mad Man 5 out of 5 - A brilliant mix of old school metal mixed with the flavor of Grunge

Undecided 2 out of 5 - A complete mess of a slow jam. very empty.

Cicada 3 out of 5 - Not a bad song, but nothing remarkable about it either

Findaway 3 out of 5 - a Pretty straight forward alternative rock song.

Silverchairs best effort

Created: 03/08/08
This is probably their best effort by far. With rocking tunes like "pure massacre" the radio hit "tommorrow" and the catchy head bangin "madman".
This album has all the bite that made the mid '90's what they were. If you were or are a fan of bands such as "stone temple pilots" ,"soundgarden",";alice in chains", "nirvana" or anything along those lines this is a cd that you need to own. I listen to much heavier bands now but this album really takes me back.
If you listen to this album and listen to the stuff from silverchair nowadays you maybe dissapointed. Frogstomp is the rawest album by far from these guys.
Keep in mind that the average age of the bands members during the frogstomp ear was 15, I think thats just amazing. If you enjoy to go back 10 or 15 years every now and then just cause...I reccomend this!

Frogstomp - Silverchair (CD 1995)

Created: 08/12/07
Older CD by a great band. Daniel Johns is a rock & roll hero! The band is excellent too. The CD has a varied sound, mostly heavier punk rock with the emphasis on rock. The songs mix heavier guitars with Daniel Johns beautiful voice. The entire CD is great, not just one hit and the rest of the CD crap. Just play it and see. The CD is one of my favorites, and I own many cds and mp3s but I always need to hear Silverchair alot.
Why did I decide to buy the CD? I saw them live at Asbury Park, they were the warmup band to Blink 182-who were terrible live at that point. The band was tight, the acoustics and the mixed sound was incredible, and we felt as if we were at Silverchair's coming out party. I had to go out and buy the CD the next day. Daniel Johns has been ill in the past few years but has overcome some stiff obstacles. If you like his new stuff, you will love his old stuff.

The album that put silverchair on the map

Created: 09/04/08
This album has sold well over 2 1/2 million copies for a reason. Most of the songs were written when the band members were all of 13 and 14 years old. It's angsty teen grunge, and song's like "Tomorrow" and "Israel's Son" are what put silverchair on the "map". If you're a fan and you've never owned this album, then go buy it!
