Movie synopsis

A powerfully graphic film (even though no violence is ever shown on the screen itself) about an Austrian family who goes on a country vacation and become the victims of two cold-blooded psychopaths who are out to torture them with their "funny games." Haneke's point, that fictional violence is as real as the real world's, is presented chillingly in this extremely well-acted, yet potentially offensive effort. Weak of stomach, beware.

I'VE READ THE REVIEWS & WARNINGS RE: "FUNNY GAMES".IT'S THE FIRST FILM BY MICHAEL HANEKE THAT I'VE SEEN.THIS MOVIE BY FAR IS NO "HENRY PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER" BY JOHN McNAUGHTON,STARRING MICHAEL ROOKER.I EXPECTED "FUNNY GAMES" TO PUT THAT DARK SHOCK TO MY SENSES.THIS FILM STARTS INTO A HOME INVASION "GAME" FOR A MARRIED COUPLE & THEIR YOUNG SON BY A COUPLE OF SICK INDIVIDUALS.DRESSED FOR TENNIS,BUT THERE TO HUMILIATE &TORTURE THEIR "HUMAN TOYS".MOST OF THEIR VIOLENCE OCCURS OFF SCREEN,BUT YOU'LL FIND THE PSYCHOLOGICAL TORMENT FAMILY SUFFERS WILL HAVE YOU WATCHING TO SEE JUST HOW THIS FAMILY'S COLD NIGHTMARE WILL END. ....? I GIVE THIS MOVIE 3*** STARS. THIS SAME MOVIE IS OUT,STARRING NAOMI WATTS,TIM ROTH ETC.FUNNY GAMES (USA?) ANYWAY "HENRY PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER" IS MUCH MORE VISUAL&DARKER ABSOLUTELY NOT FOR THE SQUEEMISH,BUT "FUNNY GAMES" IS WORTH A LOOK AND IS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE WALKED THRU THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF "DARK" FILMS. PEACE. jendrey123

Well what can I say, I already had a copy of the movie, but bought it again after my old copy got damaged. This film is a masterpiece by Michael Haneke. There is really no films like it from a technical point. I do not want to give away too much of the story, but I can say it is about two upper society boys that are serial killers. On one occasion you the viewer will be asked a question with regards to the plot by the characters as if you are there in person and helping them in the crime as a third person. On occasion you expect the worst and then nothing bad happens, then the film will rewind a few seconds(like a video tape with the distortion you get rewinding), the scen will replay and the worst will happen , yet it is not confusing to watch, or technical effects for effects sake and not added suspense. Haneke is the Stanley Kubrick of the new milinneum. He is brutal and honest in his film making as well as writing. I can also recommend his films 71 Fragments, Time of the Wolf, The Piano Teacher, Code Unknown and his latest Cache (The Hidden) for which he took Cannes Filn Festival's best director in 2005. His films are very heavy and should not be seen by children, nor anyone looking for a good time.

THE most disturbing, unsettling film I've ever seen.Innovative approach between film characters, audience, and the film process itself.Unlike any film I know of. I even wrote the director ( Michael Haneke ) to see if the film's cast was OK! The cast is THAT believable.Looking for a truly out-of-the-ordinary film? Then this is it.A masterpiece. This movie upset me for a full three weeks after watching it, so I believed it deserved to be in my home DVD collection.Do I watch this film a lot now that I own it? NO! It still upsets me but owning a gem like this film makes my DVD library shine!

I have not seen this version of the movie but I have seen the newest Funny Games and it is brilliant! It's storyline is great, the actors are great, and the dark comedy is great. This movie is overall one of the best and sickest movies.

Haneke's Best Film

The Austrian version of this movie is so disturbing and absorbing that it will be hard to look away, though you will want to at many points. The shots are held for a long time so everything soaks in. The acting is very precise and of the highest quality. Highly recommended.
