Movie synopsis

For the follow-up to his dark crime thriller SEVEN, director David Fincher decided to remain in a film noir vein. The result is THE GAME, a fast-paced cinematic roller-coaster ride that stars Michael Douglas as Nicholas Van Orton, a joyless San Francisco investment banker who receives an unusual birthday present from his estranged younger brother, Conrad (Sean Penn). The gift enrolls Nicholas in CRS (Consumer Recreation Services), a company that designs elaborate real-life games for each specific participant. As the game begins, the reluctant Nicholas becomes the victim of a series of pranks that quickly turn malicious and dangerous. Stripped of his finances and convinced that he can trust no one, Nicholas realizes that this game may be an attempt to steal his fortune and leave him for dead. In a desperate bid to regain his life, Nicholas infiltrates CRS in order to uncover the secrets of the mysterious organization.Douglas is perfect playing the uptight businessman Nicholas, cleverly riffing on his Oscar-winning performance as the cold-blooded Gordon Gekko in WALL STREET. Fincher's Kafkaesque carnival show is an exercise in taut filmmaking that mischievously pulls a seemingly endless supply of rugs out from under both Nicholas and, even more impressive, the viewer.

Michael Douglas and Sean Penn star in this 1997 thriller.
A man is drawn into a mysterious game after his brother
gives him a birthday present. This is one of Michael's
best and he and Sean are great together. This dvd has
good picture and sound, but only trailers. I recommend
this terrific thriller.

The Game (DVD, 2002)

The Game is a very interesting thriller. The film has so many twists and turns it will leave your head spining! There really is no logic to what happens next. Michael Douglas plays a role of a wealthy, bitter man that does not recognize a bizarre birthday present from his brother played by Sean Penn. I really enjoyed the suspense during the entire film and bought the movie because it is worth watching more than once.

Unexpected. Surprising. Intense. THE GAME is a chiller!

If you've ever just happened to find a diamond or a hunk of gold or found out something you thought was junk was actually a priceless treasure, you'll understand how I felt when I got this movie included in a lot purchase of video tapes. As I unpacked my new tapes, I cast this one aside, never intending to watch it. Not "my kind of movie", I thought. Well, I was bored one day and wanted to watch something I hadn't seen a million times, so into the VCR it went.

WOOF! This movie was gripping and surprising from beginning to end. Just when you're sure it is about to be predictable, it twists deliciously. Fiendishly. Michael Douglas is in top form in this thriller, which is the story of a birthday "gift" gone horribly wrong.

... so why does everyone keep saying they remember their "first time" with The Game? You'll have to watch what happens to understand ... and you'll have to watch closely until the very last minute of this excellent flick. Male or female; whether or not you think action/thrillers are "your kind of movie", I highly recommend The Game. A "sleeper" masterpiece of treachery and hope and having the guts to keep going when everything in your world is lost.

I love it because you don't really know the ending until the very end. Great Michael Douglas movie even though it's several years old. Plot is excellent. Never saw another movie even similar
