CNET Editors' review

Excellent
  • THE GOOD

The Garmin Nuvi 880 crams in a number of features, including text-to-speech functionality, MSN Direct services, and Bluetooth, into a compact design. The portable navigation system offers the best and most accurate speech recognition capabilities we've seen to date.

  • THE BAD

The Nuvi 880 is expensive, and route calculations can be sluggish.

  • THE BOTTOM LINE

As we've come to expect from the Nuvi line, the Garmin Nuvi 880 offers an impressive feature list and solid performance, but it's the accurate speech recognition that really pushes the Nuvi 880 over the edge and makes it one of the best GPS we've tested to date.

Garmin nuvi 880 Car GPS Receiver

I am more than happy with this unit. I don't think the perfect GPS has been made yet, but this one comes close. I didn't find my nearest Burger King but found places that were built after it was built. Maybe it's an advertising thing. I have tested the system built into Lexus and Toyota, and a Tom Tom and another Garmin. The Lexus and Toyota's voice commands are not very good and manual navigation is clumsy. I have no experience with the others voice commands but the 880 works and works well. You can't play the radio at a loud volume when you address the 880 but it can still be on low with your voice commands heard accurately. I'm convinced that this is the best out there at this moment in time. Look to Garmin to improve even more in the future. Bottom line I am super happy with my purchase.

Nuvi 880 GPS

Created: 04/07/10
I have a Tom Tom Go 700 and a Go 900 too. I decided to buy a new Nuvi 880 on E-bay because Tom Tom wants too much for Map upgrades. I simply chose to put my money towards a newer and more modern and more compact unit.
I am very disappointed with the Garmin Nuvi 880 because I can't hear the voice instructions at 100% volume. The Lady speaking sounds like she has a mouth full of Peanut Butter or something else in her mouth, maybe ****.
I have never used Blue Tooth.
I like some features well on the 880. I like that it posts the speed limit. I like that you have two pages to choose for info. I like that you can look for gas stations and food places and Hotels. But if you set course for a gas station and you find some other one closer then you try to get back on the highway, it will keep sending you the wrong direction back to the gas station.
I have no clue why they include an MP3 player on this unit as the sound quality is much too poor to listen to music on.

Maybe I am the only person remaining in the Country who is too poor to keep air conditioning working on 4 different older vehicles that I drive. Driving with the windows down in the summer , the wind noise simply overrides the the voice of the Garmin Lady with a mouth full of peanut butter.

My Tom Tom Go 700 had much better audio and it stayed on the window even though it is big and heavy. The Go 900 falls of the window especially in the winter and has poorer audio quality and it crashes a lot so I have to reboot it with a paper clip.
I like the Trip Summer function very well on Tom Tom. If I can sell my nuvi 880 I want to purchase a Rand McNally Trucker model to use in my cars and in my 18 wheeler too. I can only assume that Model for trucking will have much better audio.
Now that I have reached age 49 I have to keep reading glasses at my side to read the screens on any of the 3 models that I wrote about in this article.

I would also say that since I don't use my GPS often, having a consumer replaceable battery is important too.

Excellent GPS - More than what I expected

Created: 03/06/09
I waited and researched for almost 2 years, because GPS's didnt have everything I wanted in one piece of equipment, some would have bluetooth an no voice recog, or vice versa. THis finally came to be available but at a price of over $700.00 in mid08 I new this was the one just needed to wait a little more to have at a reasonable price. I got this for less than $350. The amount of MicroSd memory you can add to it is unlimited, so I got a $15 8Gb class6 card and now I have a ton of songs and extra space for everything. It comes with 4gb internal memory. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS I'VE EVER INVESTED MY MONEY IN. It already saved me twice in NYC rerouting right away when I missed the turn. POI's are great. Music Player is phenomenal. Advice try to use it with the charger always on because it increases the FM transmiter considerably, around NYC almost every single frequency is taken so there is a need for the FM transmiter to be stronger to overcome the FM stations. I LOVE IT AND STRONGLY RECOMMEND. My unit is refurbished and worked flawlessly up to this point, firmware update was really easy to do and worked great. Hands Free what to say about this beautiful feature - I didn't care for it when buying it - now is my favorite thing in the 880. Best GPS unit available in todays market. A+++.
