Gemstones of the World by Walter Schumann (1977, Hardcover)

love this book. very nice informative and so much fun to discover wonderful world of gemstones nice photographs extensive scientific data easily undstood by novice and more advanced gem hobbyist. I carry it in my purse and can read at a moments notice.

So far I can't put it down! It is packed full of info about gemstones and related topics.
Good pics and tech. info.
I have a lot to learn it seems!

Good reference book with color pictures of gemstones. Includes data on each gemstone but presumes you understand what the data means and how to use it.
For example, it identifies light absorbtive properties of each gemstone but no
details for the beginner on how to utilize that knowledge to validate which
gemstone you are trying to identify. That said, I'm glad I have the book.

The book has got some great information in it although is outdated as far as newer gemstones and different varieties of known gemstones.I wish I'd bought an up to date copy but has been helpful in recognizing stones.Wish there were more pictures of varieties of stones no pics on parariba tourmaline and wish there were more pics of polished cabachons but as I said has great information in it.

WoW!! A power packed book. Page after page of facts and photos. Brilliant pictures with fun and interesting information about the gems and where they come from. A nice size book for practical use at home or on the job. Yes on the job. Accurate enough to serve as a business guide or how or not to buy gemstones. I work for a high end jeweler and after I got my copy my boss ordered a copy for all the employees. It is now fun to learn about gems and there sources of gems we don't even sell. You can never know to much, when the subject is as exciting and always changing as the world of gems. This is the book to keep you in the know!
