    Publisher's Note

Gemstones of the World is the single, cornerstone volume that every hobbyist, jeweler, jewelry maker, and rockhound needs. And this updated edition contains a new chapter on the treatment of gemstones, expanded information on what's “New on the Market,” and 400 additional stones.

More than 1,500 full-color photos showcase each precious and semiprecious stone in its rough, natural, polished, and cut renditions. Each entry offers complete information on the gemstone's formation, structure, physical properties, and characteristics, along with the best methods of working, cutting, and polishing it. There are even full treatments of lesser-known gems; a special section on rocks as precious stones; and organic gem materials. Charts and tables (including the “double fraction” figures that experts want) help collectors identify unknown gemstones and check for genuineness.

    Versatile book on gemstones.

I purchased the 2nd edition when taking a colored gem ID course, when I started study and collecting/purchasing. Found out about the newest edition recently, and read some reviews. Since my old book is worn and marked up, I decided to purchase the new addition.

The most thorough guide on gemstones, including photo's, available. Photo's are mostly the same as the previous editions, but appear more true to life, less dark. Printing color control must have improved. Includes some newer on the marker gems and also changes in names/ re-classifications on a few. It would need annual supplements to keep on top of new finds, and types of stones that come in many unique colors and patterns (such as jasper, opal, and rhyolite, especially from the W Hemisphere). A great book to keep track of gems and stones in one's collection. The birthstone list is not what is used in the USA, (Peridot is recognized as August's, not September's, in the USA). Sections on pearls, synthetics, legends, and mystical power of stones will interest some readers. The book has been the most versatile in usefulness compared with other books on the market.
