Georgia Rule (DVD, 2007, Full Frame)

Garry Marshall, Lindsay Lohan, Felicity Huffman|Theatrical release: 2007 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Gary Marshall's GEORGIA RULE brings together Lindsay Lohan, Jane Fonda, and Felicity Huffman to play three generations in need of one another's guidance in this story about the bonds between three equally feisty women. When teen troublemaker Rachel (Lohan) pushes her alcoholic mother, Lilly (Huffman), over the edge, it becomes the responsibility of her grandmother, Georgia (Fonda), to set things straight. But even getting from San Francisco to Georgia's home in Mormon country proves difficult, with Rachel literally jumping out of the car and flirtatiously hitching a ride from handsome but guarded stranger Simon (Dermot Mulroney). No one in town is ready for Rachel, whose manic sexuality and screw-you attitude is a stark contrast to the strict Mormon values most of the local residents live by. Rachel's arrival and drama-filled stay force everyone she meets to question their way of life. Meanwhile, Georgia force-feeds Rachel the stern structure her own mother was too inebriated to offer, and while Rachel adamantly resists at first, she slowly starts to change, thanks to her grandmother's tough love. The early tone of the film abruptly changes when Rachel makes a bold and disturbing confession, but then takes it back, forcing everyone around her to figure out the truth on their own. For the rest of the film, characters scramble to navigate Rachel's lies and to decipher the truth from her statements. Viewers are kept equally in the dark, as GEORGIA RULE struggles to be both a comedy and a serious drama. Shifting back and forth somewhat clumsily, the film does offer some funny moments, but dwells on issues far too unsettling to pass itself off as a lighthearted "chick flick." While the film seems unsure at times of its goal, it does feature strong performances from its leads: three women who are more similar than any of them would like to admit.

WILL THE REAL LINDSAY LOHAN PLEASE STAND UP?

Created: 07/09/07
Lindsay Lohan delivers a weak performance as a spoiled, out-of-control teen who is sent to live with her grandmother,(Jane Fonda) for the summer. Someday when Lindsay looks back this performance she will shutter. She seems self indulgent and her acting is lazy.
She basically is playing herself. She seduces a hot mormon boy. She lies cheats and say really mean things. As movies magic works, there is a really easy explanation for all her behavior- she has a dark horrible secret that involves her step-father.
Jane Fonda shines through and although she starred in Monster-N-Law, this movie is her true return to the big screen and brings back sad memories of ON GOLDEN POND.
Felicity Huffman is solid as always and plays the drunk mother quite nicely. When you see the Fonda back on screen and she is now playing the elder, you may wonder where the time has gone.
Lohan can be a great actress but her spoiled star quality gets in the way. We have all heard about the booze, the coke, the upset director and her hopeful co-stars concerns (Huffman & Fonda).
She blew it. But in the end- movie land happiness is restored- the message rings loud and clear- redemption and forgiveness are just around the corner if you just ask for help and seek it out.... we can only hope Lindsay finds some of both while she makes her way through life.

Great Movie! Not deserving of "R" rating. (PG-13 maybe)

A great movie! Handled a very delicate topic in a very realistic and tactful manner. Even quite humorous at times. I don't usually get "R-Rated" movies, and so I was really surprised that it was. I first saw this movie on television and like it, and so I ordered it. I never dreamed of this movie being "R-Rated". I definitely can't see how it can be considered "R-Rated" because the language was pretty good (for the most part), and there weren't any sex scenes shown (just aluded to) and no violence either. Just a good wholesome movie. The only reason that I can see that the movie got an "R" rating was merely because the subject matter was on incest. But a more appropriate rating should have been "PG-13".

I love this film! I have always been a 'Fonda Fan' of not only Jane but her father and brother as well. This film is family friendly and with all of the foul language in the movies today I truly enjoyed this film and the values it seemed to display. I hope there are more like this one out sooner rather than later.

Not what I expected

This movie was good, not great mind you, just good. Loved Jane Fonda & Felicity Huffman in this movie. Lindsay Lohan is not one of my favorites but I bought the movie anyway. Storyline is good, Jane Fonda's character is great - remind's me of my mom! And I think Felicity Huffman has great range as an actress & her part in this movie did not disappoint.
