Movie synopsis

Director and screenwriter David Koepp (STIR OF ECHOES, SECRET WINDOW) brings Ricky Gervais, Greg Kinnear, and Téa Leoni together for a romantic comedy with a twist of the supernatural. Dr. Bertram Pincus (Gervais) doesn't like people very much. In fact, the antisocial dentist does everything he can to avoid interaction with other human beings. Unfortunately, he gets more than he bargained for when he is released from the hospital after undergoing a standard procedure: he can see dead people, and they can see him. Suddenly, every ghost in New York City wants Pincus to help clean up their unfinished business. Dapper Frank (Kinnear) is the most persistent ghost, badgering Pincus to help keep his widow, Gwen (Leoni), from making a big mistake. Gervais is perfect as Pincus, whose deadpan expressions make obvious his disdain for people. His comic timing is spot on throughout the film. Kinnear makes Frank likable, not an easy feat since he apparently wasn't such an upstanding guy when he was alive and married to Leoni's Gwen. Aasif Mandvi appears as a dentist sharing Gervais's office, and Billy Campbell is Gwen's new love interest. SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE star Kristen Wiig is a scene-stealer as Pincus's surgeon, particularly when she is trying to avoid telling her patient what went wrong during his procedure. Dana Ivey and Alan Ruck also appear as ghosts in need of help., EXTRAS and THE OFFICE star Ricky Gervais brings his trademark wit to this comedy. The British actor stars as a man who dies for seven minutes, but his awakening brings more than just a newfound appreciation for life: he can now see ghosts.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"Gervais stifles the loose-cannon mannerisms of his OFFICE persona to play Dr. Bertram Pincus.....Gervais is a master of the flustered broken thought, and Koepp takes full advantage in scenes that pit Pincus against a distracted doctor and an imposingly large dog."
Los Angeles Times - Jan Stuart (09/19/2008)

"[There are] super, natural performances in GHOST TOWN, led by the distinctively edgy and witty British comedian Ricky Gervais....A good-natured and engaging fantasy-romantic comedy..."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (09/19/2008)

"[A] buoyant comedy....[The characters] resurrect the spirits of classic movie curmudgeons like W.C. Fields and such romantic comedians as Cary Grant and Carole Lombard in Woody Allen territory."
New York Times - Stephen Holden (09/19/2008)

3 stars out of 4 -- "Cheers to David Koepp, who writes blockbusters, directs occultish thrillers and finds a beguiling comfort zone with this zesty, twisted fun."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (09/26/2008)

What happens to you when you die? Perhaps you remain on Earth unable to rest in peace until you resolve all of your unfinished business. This is the sort of limbo Frank Herlihy (Greg Kinnear) finds himself in following his untimely demise on the streets of Manhattan.

Hope for completing the transition arrives the day that something goes horribly wrong during Bertram Pincus' (Ricky Gervais) routine colonoscopy, an anesthesia accident that leaves the dentist dead on the operating table for several minutes. Once revived, he can suddenly see ghosts, and this development is not lost on Frank who befriends Bertram hoping to sabotage his widow Gwen's (Tea Leoni) impending remarriage to a conniving attorney (Billy Campbell).Although Bertram is a misanthrope not inclined to do anything for anybody, he promises to help prevent her from walking down the aisle. In return, Frank agrees to keep all the other ghosts suddenly annoying Bertram at bay. However, what neither anticipates is that Bert might develop feelings for Gwen, and the love quadrangle which ensues is the hub around which Ghost Town revolves.

Cute movie makes you realize time is short, and the things you do can affect everyone you know even if it is a stranger.Hope this helps you decide. Thanks for reading! :)

I bought this movie because the synopsis sounded really good and...
The actors are nice... the quality of the disc is fine...but....
the story? i was so bored that i quit watching it by the first half an hour..

Ghost Town is a charming movie about a solitary dentist who has a life altering event that enables him to see ghosts. Ricky Gervais brings this role to life with a dry British humor as he does his best to avoid the spirits. After a series of events he falls for the widow of one of the ghosts and finds out he does not want the solitude any more.

A great laugh

I thought this one was super. It's hard for a film like this to keep me laughing till the end but I found it to be surprisingly hilarious. I can see why it would get a bad rap in the states. Ricky Gervais brings his regular British comedy style to the set, something not everyone is a fan of. It's all good though. Cast, story everything is better than expected.

Thanks again E-Bay!!! We Love this movie! It has the sarcastic British-boss from "Night in the museum",Greg Kinear, and Tea' Leoni.
An odd,but warm, romantic comedy with some afterlife interludes. A perfect movie for date-night. We recieved our DVD quickly after ordering it (1 week).
And got a pretty good price,$10 I think. So,all-in-all, a bargain that was...
"Out of this world!!!" Pun Intended...:-)
