They Don't Call It The Curse For Nothing!

I cannot say how many times I passed this movie over at the video store. The cover did not appeal to me, I just thought it was another teenybopper slasher wannabe. If you read my other horror reviews you will see I do not hold high hopes for "newer" horror movies. They are either so intellectual they are not scary or they are so dumbed down they are unwatchable .
So when I caught the begining of Ginger Snaps on a movie channel I realized this movie was different. If you are a true horror fan the beginning will have you hooked! So next day I went and got the Ginger Snaps trilogy.
Ginger and Bridget are sister who love the macabre. The stage suicides for a school project, they are antisocial and hate everyone and everything - except each other. They are so close they have made a death pack. Although the girls are in their mid teens they have yet to get "the curse", their mother is worried but the girls could not care less. One night, on their way to get even with a popular girl, Ginger gets attacked by an animal. Plus she gets her period - the girl cannot get a break! The rest of the movie is Ginger's transformation from antisocial to town tramp and town werewolf. Bridget tries to help and enlists the help of the town dope dealer who happened to hit a werewolf with his car.
Katherine Isabelle and Emily Perkins are excellent as the sisters. The small budget gives this movie a gritty look and feel that is essential to good horror movies. Big budget = big F/X, bad story, no creepy.
Very smart and witty script, the "werewolf as metaphor for puberty" is intellectual but not overpowering.
Creepy, scary and funny. I highly recommend Ginger Snaps and the sequels!

This Ginger really Snaps.

This somewhat underground film probably didn't get the exposure necessary to draw a large review from the U.S., but just because it was Canadian doesn't mean that it wasn't any good. This film really had the power to touch you in a deep way and emotionally it achieved what it was set out to do which is quite extraordinary. As a werewolf genre film, it simply blows the CGI films with large budgets such as UNDERWORLD away on delivery. The direction was seamless
which probably was ultimately what saved this film since budgetary constraints caused them on old-fashioned "acting" to tie all the loose ends and bring about continuity. Although Isabelle is the "Ginger" of the title and she is so tightly involve in the plot, it is Perkins as Brigitte that commands respect for her effort.
The Fitzgerald sisters with their fascination for 'staged horror' find themselves very much on the outer in the school social hierarchy. It is not until Ginger is bitten by a werewolf, in what is undoubtedly the most graphic and realistic lycan savaging ever filmed...that they are forced even further into social isolation, however, neither the sisters nor the film ever lose sight of their sibling bonds, itself, which was consummated by a blood-pact at childhood.
There is nothing predictable or unoriginal about this film, from the script to the camera angles, right up to the heartfelt tragedy itself of Ginger's condition. And that is why this film leaves most other horror films in its wake - it is multi-dimensional with strong characterizations. Mimi Rogers even, in a smallish part as the girls' mother is spot on hitting the exact right note as a frustrated mother and increasingly unfulfilled wife.
The film weaves brilliantly the coming-of-age pains with the physical transformation brought on by the lycanthropic condition. Marvelous imagery of menstrual blood at critical moments.
I'LL GIVE THIS A 5/5 FOR ORIGINALITY AND POISE IN HORROR.

One of my all time favorites!

This movie had everything a horror movie should have. It's dark, eerie, depressing, scary and very, very gory! The violence is pretty strong, but it fits the movie perfectly. The story is about 2 close sisters who are obsessed with death and make movies about dying. Until one night, something almost takes Ginger's life that changes her forever. I wont spoil the rest of the movie, but if you're a true horror fan, you will love this one! It's crazy and fun. You can watch it over and over and never get tired of it. Worth buying!!

an awesome story of loyalty and the simple truth that its hopeless.
the movie begins with some of the locale neighborhood dogs getting massacred by an evil beast. ginger the star of the movie and her sister are the first to be attacked, ginger being bitten several times before losing the werewolf over the highway, slowly begins her transformation. Bridget, unbelieving, tries her best to confront ginger about her situation. but ultimately fails. and only succeeds in bringing the curse on herself as well. the end is the best and so i wont spoil it for you but, i do recommend getting this movie.
