Synopsis
Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson penned the Millennium trilogy, which landed on American shores with great anticipation with THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. It's the story of a financial journalist who agrees to investigate a 40-year-old kidnapping in exchange for help with his legal woes. The journalist teams up with a rebellious but savvy young computer hacker, and together the unlikely duo unravel the horrifying, shocking truth at the heart of the case. A complex, intelligent work, Larsson's novel became so popular in Denmark that it outsold the Bible. Larsson, however, never got to witness the success of his books, for he died shortly after completing the series.

Publisher's Note
An international publishing sensation, Stieg Larsson’s Girl with the Dragon Tattoo combines murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue into one satisfyingly complex and entertainingly atmospheric novel.

Harriet Vanger, scion of one of Sweden’s wealthiest families, disappeared over forty years ago. All these years later, her aged uncle continues to seek the truth. He hires Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently trapped by a libel conviction, to investigate. He is aided by the pierced and tattooed punk prodigy Lisbeth Salander. Together they tap into a vein of unfathomable iniquity and astonishing corruption.

From the Trade Paperback edition.

Forty years after the disappearance of Harriet Vanger from the secluded island owned and inhabited by her powerful family, her uncle, convinced that she had been murdered by someone from her own deeply dysfunctional clan, hires journalist Mikael Blomqvist and Lisbeth Salander, an unconventional young hacker, to investigate. Simultaneous.

Forty years after the disappearance of Harriet Vanger from the secluded island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger family, her octogenarian uncle hires journalist Mikael Blomqvist and Lisbeth Salander, an unconventional young hacker, to investigate.

Industry Reviews
"The ending of THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE...comes straight out of a horror movie: it's gory, harrowing and operatically over the top. The reason it works is the same reason that DRAGON TATTOO worked: Mr. Larsson's two central characters, Salander and Blomkvist, transcend their genre and insinuate themselves in the reader's mind through their oddball individuality, their professional competence and, surprisingly, their emotional vulnerability."

The first 21st Century classic trilogy!

Created: 23/01/11
What a great series & what a true misfortune for action/drama/thriller lovers everywhere that Stieg Larsson only finished 3 of his projected 10 volumes. He died shortly after submitting the first 3 for publication... but after the reader enters Larsson's world with this taut debut episode, it is easy to subscribe to the conspiracy theories that Scandinavian neo-Nazis, or mafia, or both assassinated him. The English translation in all 3 books is excellent. Unfamiliar with Sweden? Arm yourself with a modestly detailed map of the country and the pages from a travel guide dealing with pronunciation and currency conversion - you'll be so glad you did, you'll wonder why the publisher hasn't included this info as appendices. Do NOT read these out of order, as the sequels each reference their precursors and basically will spoil them for you. Otherwise, be prepared to soon join the masses clamoring for the Larsson heirs to let Stieg's longtime paramour/collaboator at least finish the 4th volume if not the entire outlined series!!!!! Yes, they're that good!!!!!!!!

Don't buy this book!

Don't buy this book! It's a trap! It will cost you three times the cover price, or more, because, once you read this one, you're hooked and will have to buy the remaining two in the trilogy. The Swedish movies are great, but the books are fantastic. This is one of those "miracle" books that are written, and you wonder at the miracle of the human mind and talent that can produce such a work of art and intrigue. Noomi Rapace and Liz Salander are so far out of the norm, you find yourself contemplating why you like her so much -- good wins over evil I guess, even when good looks evil and the evil looks good? The start of the trilogy

Created: 08/10/10
I really liked this book, and liked the second one even better. This book introduces the main characters, and sets the scene. It's good in its own right, but even better when seen as part of the millennium trilogy. It's well worth the time spent reading it, and I'm sorry the author never got to see its success.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

I've read all three books in this series and they are wonderful. I wish Americans could write crime fiction as well, maybe then more people would start reading again. Larsson didn't feel he has to dumb down his book to pull in more readers and I appreciate that. His heroes aren't perfect and his characters are not one dimensional. I would highly recommend this book as well as the other two in the series.
