Glenn Beck's Common Sense: The Case Against an Out-Of-Control Government, Inspired by Thomas Paine by Glenn Beck (2009, Paperback)

Author: Glenn Beck | Publisher: Threshold Editions | Language: English

Product description

Synopsis
Conservative comedian and popular radio pundit Glenn Beck uses a contemporary analysis of COMMON SENSE, Thomas Paine's seminal pamphlet of patriotic principles, to try to inspire American citizens to reclaim control of their dysfunctional government. Beck sees many similarities between the domineering English monarchy which Paine rallied against and the current two-party governmental system of the United States, and he believes that the same inherent rights and freedoms put forth by Paine may be called upon once again to motivate Americans to take an active role in forging real political change.

Publisher's Note
"If you believe it's time to put principles above parties, character above campaign promises, and Common Sense above all -- then I ask you to read this book...."

In any era, great Americans inspire us to reach our full potential. They know with conviction what they believe within themselves. They understand that all actions have consequences. And they find commonsense solutions to the nation's problems.

One such American, Thomas Paine, was an ordinary man who changed the course of history by penning Common Sense, the concise 1776 masterpiece in which, through extraordinarily straightforward and indisputable arguments, he encouraged his fellow citizens to take control of America's future -- and, ultimately, her freedom.

Nearly two and a half centuries later, those very freedoms once again hang in the balance. And now, Glenn Beck revisits Paine's powerful treatise with one purpose: to galvanize Americans to see past government's easy solutions, two-part monopoly, and illogical methods and take back our great country.

Revisits Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" in light of contemporary American issues, and suggests that some of the very freedoms given as reasons that independence was first necessary are again in jeopardy.

This Book Should be Called "Common Sense by Itself"

Created: 11/07/09
I am very sympathetic with some conservative ideas, especially those involving taxation abuse and excess of government control. In that matter, this book get across these topics very well by citing recent examples of actions which seems tyrannical and not really of common agreement (or sense, if you prefer to call that way).

However, what I still struggle to understand is how the original Thomas Paine's publication is linked to these ideas. Seems to me that the author is trying to justify this thoughts on principles of the early American history when, in fact, he didn't need to. A ideology of any nature can be well preached, explained and accepted without resorting to means in an attempt to prove those points right. Upon reading the last pages of the book, where the original Common Sense is reproduced, made me think about if there's really a connection between both things.

My opinion on Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto follows the same reasoning - a book which is also fine and reasonable in content, but tries - unnecessarily - to search for an historical event to use as the basis of its writing.

This book is worth reading just for one thing: common sense based on the current political environment that we are living in for years and years.

Common Sense

This book is a MUST READ for every American that values their freedom. It is neither Republican nor Democrat. If is not about polital parties, but about how all political parties in office from the deep past to the present are not concerned about you, but about how they can take your money and use it for personal gain and power.
I purchased this book after watching the Glenn Beck Show which airs Monday through Friday at 5:pm est. The main reason I purchased it is that I fear the FCC are doing everything they can to get this program off the air. It informs the people about how our current system works and it is one of the scariest schemes against hard-working, law-abiding citizens. Wake Up America!!
Read this book now, and pass it along to everyone you can.
Although, I am angered (at the Government) when I read this book, I would rather be angered. Anger gives people incentive to actually do something about it. It is better than idly waiting for your freedoms to be taken from you. Take charge American people. Thomas Jefferson said "When the people fear the Government, thats tierny, when the Government fears the people, that's liberty". Remember, our elected officials are here to serve us. They are public servants. I don't know if you have noticed, but it is not working that way. It is time for "We the People" to set the laws and make the decisions.

Our Rights should not be left.

Created: 23/06/09
This book is an easy read. I read the first 105 pages in one day. I read 57 pages before I took a pen and 'starred' paragraphs that I wanted others to read. Then just to make sure that I could find the passages easily, I circled the page number. Our country is on the brink of socialism. As Glenn Beck said in his book "Common Sense", it's like they keep firing one thing after another at us, change this law, anything to distract us from what the original 'change' was. We, the people, didn't vote for TARP. We, the people, don't want higher taxes. But we are hearing about the possiblility of our health benefits paid by our employers being taxed. How can a president of a country bow before another county leader? How can we be asked to
volunteer' for our country? There are volunteers helping others. We just don't need to be singled out by anyone just to prove that we are volunteering. We are citizens of the United States of America. I want our government to follow the law of the Constitution. Our Bill of Rights are not negotiable. Our Constitution is not negotiable. Wake up America! Stand up and be counted. Support our Constitution and those who adhere to it. Those who do not, VOTE them OUT of office. I don't want change. For the sake of future FREE generations, keep talking, questioning, and watching your elected officials. If you want to be informed about our country's politics read "Common Sense". Sign the inside cover and pass it around. See how many people think it's important enough for our future to read and stand up and take our country back!

Glenn and some "Common Sense"

Created: 22/06/09
I've followed Glenn's career for several years and I am so glad that he wrote this book. I saw where he said (on t.v.) that he doubted that he was really going to go through with writing this book because of all the criticism he knew it would cause him to take. In this new book, "Common Sense" he blasts both Republican's and Democrat's equally and with vigor using a modern interpretation of Thomas Paines' early historical writings "Common Sense". Glenn gives page after page and example after example of how our Founding Father's (mostly in their own words from documented writings) meant America to be one thing, traveling down one direction, only to be hijacked repeatedly by 20th century (and now 21st century) politicians who seem to be taking us away from our founding documents and principles. The book is a quick read, and a good history lesson for those who are willing to listen. Please don't just believe the hype, or sometimes the negative press about Glenn, he at times may come off a bit odd but the man uses historically accurate points in a modern way to help generate debate (and in my humble opinion to try and get American's to think for themselves instead of parroting some media outlet's views and beliefs). If your willing to give this book a chance you'll be amazed at how well written it is, and how much historical information you'll pick up in such a quick reading book.

A must read for those of us who believe in Common Sense

Created: 07/07/09
Some people may think Glenn Beck is a kook and over the top - this book debunks that myth. The book is well-written and thought provoking. The author presents his ideas in a manner that makes a person wonder why (if you have) been snookered into believing whatever party line presented by both primary political parties. This book is not an Obama basher. It is truly non-partisan. The second half of the book is Thomas Paines' Common Sense verbatim. A must read for all citizens of America. I highly recommend all citizens read this book, whatever their political leaning.
