Movie synopsis

GLORY recounts the bravery of a group of Civil War soldiers often overlooked by history--the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts, a troop of free black men who fought to help win liberty for their enslaved brothers. Based on the historical novels ONE GALLANT RUSH by Peter Burchand and LAY THIS LAUREL by Lincoln Kirstein and the letters of Robert Gould Shaw, the film follows the youthful Colonel Shaw (Matthew Broderick) as he takes responsibility for readying these soldiers for battle. Shaw, a privileged young Boston Brahman, finds the job harder than expected because many of the men balk at taking orders from him. Private Trip (Denzel Washington) is especially resistant to Shaw's leadership, but over time the two come to an understanding as they endure the hardships of the war. On July 18, 1863, Shaw volunteers the 54th for the honor of leading the charge against Ft. Wagner, a mission that means almost certain death, with Trip carrying the regiment's colors into battle. This gritty and realistic vision of the horrors of war is a moving and critical examination of a lost piece of history. Beautifully shot and triumphantly acted (by a cast that also includes Morgan Freeman, Cary Elwes, and Andre Braugher), director Edward Zwick's film serves as a tribute to the courage and selfless bravery of the black soldiers of the Civil War.

Loosely based on the letters of Boston-born Union commander Col. Robert
G Shaw (Matthew Broderick), this Academy Award winning civil war film
follows the first group of African-Americans to serve in combat during
the Civil War. The heoics of Shaw s volunteer regiment of black soldiers-
including a fugitive slave (Denzel Washington, in an Oscar winning performance)
and a grave-digger (Morgan Freeman) are coronicled. The battle scene of the
attack of the 54th against Fort Fisher in Charleston S.C. is one of the best
Civil War battle scenes ever created, and a narrative points out that the
regiment lost a staggering amount of men in the attack--against an almost
impregnable position--which was never taken from the Confederates during the
war. This movie was directed by a master director- Edward Zwick (Blood
Diamond, Defiance, The Siege, etc) and he certainly did a great job here.
A really great movie that historians, students of the Civil War or just
Drama lovers will certainly enjoy as they go through the trials of the troops.

Awesome tribute to the 54th Regiment

This is an excellent, accurate movie portraying a not so flattering time in our country's history in an almost complimentary light.

It has always been one of my favorite movies, and it is easy to see why Mr. Washington won an Academy Award for his work as Private Trip.

If you have not seen this one, it is highly recommended, especially if you are a history buff. I am currently taking college level American History, and this movie helped me with an essay assignment I needed to complete for the class.
