    Synopsis
"A case against religion and a description of the ways in which religion is man-made"--Provided by the publisher.

Essayist and contrarian Christopher Hitchens takes on all the world's major and minor religions (and, perhaps, God himself) in this well-argued, though controversial, summa theologica. Hitchens considers religion to be a primitive response to the world, cites the harm done through history in the name of religion, and argues in favor of science and reason. He is less than hagiographic on Gandhi, Billy Graham, the Dalai Lama, and, of course, Mother Teresa, who got the full Hitchens in his earlier work, THE MISSIONARY POSITION. As always, Hitchens is erudite, acerbic, and eminently readable. And he can quote scripture to illustrate his points!

    Publisher's Note
In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris's recent bestseller, The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case
against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos. With eloquent clarity, Hitchens frames the argument for a more secular life based on science and
reason, in which hell is replaced by the Hubble Telescope's awesome view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty and symmetry
    of the double helix.

Poses a case against organized religion that draws on an erudite reading of major religious texts, documenting the myriad ways in which religion reflects human agendas and distorts sexuality and the perception of the origins of the universe, in a science-based analysis that considers the benefits of a secular world.

    Industry Reviews
"GOD IS NOT GREAT is a coolly angry book, but there are good laughs too....[W]hat a splendid, boisterously virile broadside of a book it is."
    (09/07/2007)

"[Christopher Hitchens] has written, with tremendous brio and great wit, but also with an underlying genuine anger, an all-out attack on all aspects of religion....[A] serious and deeply felt book, totally consistent with his beliefs of a lifetime."

    God in NOT great

    Created: 01/02/08
The book is exactly what it says on the cover. A narrative about what's wrong with organized religion, and how the world has become a much more dangerous and frightening place in the name of religion. Of course, it's not about god, but about how people manipulate and brainwash other people in the name of their particular god. I knew it was bad; the terrorists we are dealing with now are a prime example; but it's even worse than I imagined and has been this way for over 2000 years. The author is an expert on his subject and submits the simple facts and practical examples for your perusal. It's one of the most frightening books I've ever read.

    A Must Read

Although I found his writing style quite abrasive (and at some points even contemptuous of religious sorts), he presented sound logic and facts that really added some firepower to my agnostic beliefs. Contrary to the title's suggestion, this book is not so much an argument against GOD or belief in a higher power, as it is against religion and it's adverse effects on mankind (hence the subtitle How Religion Poisons Everything). A good read for anyone of any faith (or of no faith). It shouldn't offend if you are educated and open minded, religious or not.

    God Is Not Great

This book was exactly as described and arrived in a timely manner. I purchased this book because I have recently read another book on the same subject, "The End of Faith" by Sam Harris which was very enlightening and wanted to see what Mr. Hitchens had to say. I haven't started reading "God Is Not Great" yet because I am currently reading books on the threat of Islam, mostly by Robert Spencer - the last one was "Stealth Jihad" which should be read by every non-Muslim in America - it's a real wake up call. But I'm currently starting on "Cruel and Usual Punishment" by Nonie Darwish which is about Sharia (Islamic Law). Did you know that President Obama has nominated Harold Koh, the dean of the Yale Law School, to be one of the government's top lawyers - the State Department's legal adviser - that's the Harold Koh who stated that "America's focus on the war on terrorism is obsessive", that America is one of the three countries that form what Koh calls "the axis of disobedience" with regard to national law, and the same Koh who stated that he sees "no reason why sharia law would not be applied to govern a case in the United States". The reason why that last statement is so troubling is that Mr. Koh is trying to introduce sharia law into America - and once we accept sharia law, you can kiss the Constitution and Bill of Rights goodby forever, and America will become Islamic, that is a totalitarian, theocratic Islamic state.

    God is Not Great

I'm half way through this book. I am learning more about various beliefs, superstitions and religions than I ever did in 12 years of religious training. While I don't agree with the author on some things, and I know there are at least a few mistakes in the book, he makes many valid points which really make you THINK and for the first time you realize it's "okay" to ask questions, and that it is actually a GOOD thing to question rather than accept blindly. This was purchased on the recommendation of a family member with whom I had a very candid discussion. He thought this might interest me and he was correct. I am finding it fascinating.

Christopher Hitchens is one of a handful of the most recognizable atheists in Western Culture, and his skill with the English language turns his message into a thing of enjoyment and delight. I found myself carrying this book to appointments so that I would not have to waste the time that I had reading something else. This is a second copy of this title that I have purchased as the first is on loan and I didn't want to be without this excellent nonfiction work. Do yourself a favor and buy two copies of this book. It is a life changer.
