Gettysburg yes, Gods and Generals, NO
Created: 10/02/11
Gettysburg tries. Don't be fooled. It's based on a book of lies, Killer Angels. According to the lies in this book, a Maine regimental commander persuades bull-headed Maine mutineers to join his regiment the day of the battle. These men help save the day - glory be!!Historically, these Maine deserters from the 2nd Maine actually joined the 20th Maine back in MAY, way before the battle in July. And the commander's orders for a planned bayonet charge is also very suspicious. Such an order was never heard by the other officers who survived this fight. They saw men go downhill to help the wounded; others assumed it was a charge, and charged. Oh, Hollywood.
WHOEVER DID THE MAKE-UP SHOULD BE BANNED FROM MOVIES> These beards are about the most FAKE looking things as a Middle School costume party, especially Longstreet. Lee looks like he's on quaaludes.
The fact that Jeb Stuart was to hit the Federal center from behind during Pickett's charge, but was stopped by Custer's cavalry, is arely mentioned.
The movie ignores the supreme sacrifices of other Northern regiments who die to save a critical Union position on Little Round Top
Watching the movie Gods and Genrals makes going to the dentist fun. Who is ugkier, Stonewall or his wife> and how did she become pregnant?? Gods and Generals is insulting Southern propoganda. It totally ignores the Union victories at South Mountain, the standoff at Antietam Creek, and the fact that JAckson's weirdness during the Seven Days almost cost the South the war. Jackson was a demented weirdo who drove his troops like a fiend and was shot at many times by his own men,
The commentator forgets the historical facts. The South started the shooting war by firing on a Union ship, a Union fort in Charleston Harbor, and forcing them to surrender Federal property. Only then did Lincoln call for volunteers to DEFEND the Union. . The commentator twists this and to quotes Virginians saying they left the Union because Lincoln's call-to-arms forced it to repel invaders. You do remember that when segregation became illegal, a Virginia county-wide school system CLOSED rather than accept black students? Quite a heritage, indeed.
This half-wit movie director then compares Burnside's stupidity at Fredericksburg with Julius Caesar crossing the Rubicon?? Please. Pickett's charge was just as dumb. How about Lee's commander losing his battle orders before the South Mountain and Antietam fights?? What could be stupider...Ah, that good, addicting Southern tobacky.
Don't waste time on Gods and Generals.

Great Movie About Great People

If to make a powerful film version of Michael Shaara's greatest book "Killer Angels" sounds impossible, that means "Gods and Generals" achieved impossible. To direct thousands of people and make the battle scenes look as historically accurate as possible, that's another accomplishment. Of course, this is not action flick so do not expect flying guts, but there's enough drama and great acting to keep you on the edge of your sofa. Jeff Daniels as col. Chamberlain builds the glory of his character more on humanity than on heroism, so he seems to be more powerful than most of the Generals on either side of the conflict. It is a great story based on historical, thoroughly researched facts (Michael Shaara wrote the book almost eight years) filmed in the area where the Army of Virginians (The South) decided to destroy the Army of Potomac (The North)... A must see!

The God's of Gettysburg
Created: 07/12/07
This is an excellent rehashing of the Civil War's most important battle and the men who lead each Army. God's and Generals follows the South's Thomas (Stonewall) Jackson from the pre-war period through his death from friendly fire after Chancellorsville. It is engaging, although a little slow in places.
Gettysburg follows the skirmishes leading up the the main battle as well as the interactions of both sides during those three horribly lethal days in July 1863. The highlight of this movie is the Union Army's barely holding onto Little Round Top on the 2nd day due to the gallantry of the Maine regiment and Col. Joshua Chamberlain. Jeff Daniels does a great job of portraying Col Chamberlain, as professor from Bowdoin College who would later become the governor of Maine.
A must see for anyone who follows the Civil War.

Gettysburg (2007, DVD)

I read the book, "Killer Angels". Before seeing this movie. I thought they did a good job in keeping with the storyline. The actors portrayed Gen. Buford, Lee, Chamberlin, longstreet did a very good job with the look and manners of that time pd.Why I bought this movie so that my daughter who is taking a Civil War class at college could see what Gettsyburg looked like, get a feel for the battles. The battle maps were nice to view on the DVD.The Gettysburg movie was great. The Gods and Generals was O.K. bit confusing. I didn't like the end with the funeral of Gen. Stone Wall Jackson. They should have given a rap on all the Gens. of the South and North

I've always been a fan of the Civil War era films and books. The movie Gettysburg was a well film production deplicting the director vision of this Civil War battle. Entertaining and informative of the 3 day in July and the men who carried out the strategies of the battle. Would recommend to anyone who is interested in the Civil War.
I have not seen the Gods and Generals yet, but my expectation are high for it. I hope anyone interested would consider watch this dvd also.
