Godzilla 2000 (DVD, 2000, Japanese Language Version and English Dubbed Version)

Takao Okawara, Kitagawa Tsutomu|Theatrical release: 2000 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Godzilla (Tsutomo Kitagawa) is back and this time he's trying to smash and destroy all of Japan's nuclear reactors and power plants. In this 23rd film in the cult series of monster movies that began in 1954, GODZILLA 2000 beckons the giant, indestructible lizard from his hiding place deep in the ocean. A local scientist (Takehiro Murata) who tries to decode the giant lizard's motives and predict where his next terrifying steps will land concludes that there must be a reason why Godzilla has emerged from the sea. However, when a 6,000-year-old meteor surfaces from the bottom of the ocean and turns into a spaceship, Godzilla--along with the entire population of Japan--is overwhelmed by chaos, crisis, and hysteria. Yuki (Naomi Nishidi), a local journalist trying to get a close-up shot of Godzilla, along with Shinoda (Takehiro Murata) and his kid daughter (Mayu Sizuki), form a guerilla research group called the GPN (Godzilla Prediction Network). They are the "good guys," making the CCI (Crisis Control Intelligence), headed up by a hilariously nihilistic Katagiri (Hiroshi Abe), the "bad guys." Takao Okawara's GODZILLA 2000 is perfectly consistent with its predecessors: the monsters are nasty and ferocious and they wipe out every skyscraper in Tokyo, literally leveling the city. The film brings back all the old tricks, with special effects akin to the Godzilla films of yore and plenty of monster mania.

Fun relaunch of the big guy

Created: 29/02/08
This is quite a relaunch of the big green master of disaster! The first of the new "Alternate Reality" series of Godzilla films, Godzilla 2000 was an answer to the less than craptastic American Godzilla film made in the late 90's. This movie is standard guy-in-a-rubber-suit fare with updated special effects and updated critter designs. Godzilla had never looked better before thsi film, and he makes a bigger mess than ever before. It's a fun, goofy, action-packed ride! The kids should dig it as much as any adult could. The bad part is that the DVD is only offered with an English dubbed voice track, and it's HORRIBLE. The commentary shows that the guys who organized the dub had very little grasp of the subtle Japanese script and an even worse sense of humor. Some of the one-liners are god-awful at best. But, if you can look past that, the movie is very much worth the money for seeing the big G at his best! Excellent!

Godzilla is BACK

So the effects haven't improved by leaps and bounds, but they're a little better...and you gotta admit that Godzilla looks slightly better too. The look isn't the only that's changed with our large lizard, though. In this film, Godzilla is reinvented (again) for the new millenium. Only he isn't that loveable super-hero of Japan's past. This time, he's back to his path of destruction and terrorizing Japan - just like the Godzilla in the films from 1985 and after. This makes the stories btter because Godzilla is back to destroy Japan and suck it's nuclear energy, but you still get great monster battles. This particular story has a bit of a mystery to it. While there isn't a terrible amount of action involved, the story still helps reintroduce Godzilla into the year 2000 with almost flawless execution. While the story may lag at times, it will still satisfy anyone. Old school Godzilla fans should have no problem enjoying the new millenium series.

Godzilla 2000

Only the second Toho Studios Godzilla movie (Godzilla 1985 being the other) to hit the big screens in America. This is a the first movie of the Millennium Godzilla series (which began in 2000 and ran through Godzilla Final Wars in 2004 with 6 films in all) and is easily the best movie of the group. This new Godzilla battles Orga, an alien monster which adapts itself to survive on Earth by extracting DNA from Godzilla himself. Everything a Godzilla movie should be and, I suspect, a direct retort by Toho Studios to the makers of that completely horrible 1998 godzilla movie by Tristar pictures. Godzilla 2000 is the movie every true G-Fan should have.

Godzilla 2000

I think this is a great modern version by Japan. It has great special effects, includes a bit of humor and romance but stays true to the classic ones. It is much better than a lot of movies made in the 60's and 70's. Enjoy!
