    Album Notes
2 LPs on 1 CD: WOMAN, WOMAN (1968)/YOUNG GIRL (1968).Liner Note Author: Mark Marymont. In essence, Collectables Records' Gary Puckett & the Union Gap compilation A Golden Classics Edition is a two-fer CD combining the group's first two albums, named after its first two singles, Woman, Woman and Young Girl. But the addition at the end of the disc of the next five singles -- "Lady Willpower," "Over You," "Don't Give in to Him," "This Girl Is a Woman Now," and "Let's Give Adam and Eve Another Chance" -- makes this a more thorough best-of for the group, at a generous 76-minute running time. Gary Puckett & the Union Gap was very much a singles act; the first six of those seven singles, all of which reached the Top 15 and four of which went gold, are all most people know the band for. The full contents of the first two albums suggest that that is all the group should be known for, too. The albums are clearly afterthoughts thrown together to generate some LP sales tied into the hit singles. They are dominated by covers of hit records that were in the charts at the time: Glen Campbell's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife" (although, to be fair, Puckett recorded the latter before Campbell scored a hit with it); Cher's "You Better Sit Down Kids"; Neil Diamond's "Kentucky Woman"; the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody"; the Beatles' "Lady Madonna"; Petula Clark's "Kiss Me Goodbye"; Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey"; Manfred Mann's "The Mighty Quinn"; and Aretha Franklin's "(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone." The arrangements ape the hit versions, and Puckett gamely applies his tastefully soulful voice to them. There are also some other songs, all of them forgettable except for a good version of Tim Hardin's "Don't Make Promises." An actual greatest-hits set would probably include Puckett's two solo chart entries and selections from subsequent albums. But this collection really contains all that a '60s music fan would want from Gary Puckett & the Union Gap. ~ William Ruhlmann

Go Back to when POP music was PHENOMENAL!

I was always a fan of "Gary Pucket and the Union Gap." His tenor voice is still virtually unrivaled and the tones of his voice are distinct and unique.
Although I don't recall most of the songs on this great CD, the ones that did make the top ten, like "YOUNG GIRL," make it worth the purchase. I think you will recognize about 1/3 of the cuts and instantly like the others. I had a "Best of Gary Puckett and the Union Gap" LP in my high school years and I played it until it was completely scratched; this was my chance to purchase a great CD compilation containing all those hits PLUS learn that he did his own take on such 60s classics as Glen Campbell's "By the time I get to Phoenix" and Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey."
Gary Pucket can outsing the best of them! Remember this great artist with the purchase of this CD! A great deal and a great collection that I hope to enjoy for years. BUY AND ENJOY: it has not been removed from my CD changer since the day it arrived!

First 2 Union Gap Albums + Bonus Tracks

    Created: 18/05/07
This CD is a necessity for all Gary Puckett & The Union Gap fans. It has their classic 1st 2 albums in full with every track, plus the hit singles that came after these 2 albums, as bonus tracks. All their biggest hits are here, but what is really essential are the full albums that contain many great songs. The 1st album not only has WOMAN WOMAN, but an uptempo song with horns that Gary really nails - M'LADY [ not the Sly & The Family Stone song ]. Also has more blue eyed soul greats like PAINDROPS, BELIEVE ME, I WANT A NEW DAY, and more. I always liked their original material better than their covers of the hits of the day, which are good for Gary's vocals, but not nearly as great as the hits & original songs that they recorded. A super CD LOADED with timeless songs!

If you were a teenager in 1967, this was on the radio all of the time. I like this musical group and this particular CD has all the popular songs.

If you like Gary Puckett's work, this is a must have CD. This has just about every great song he did and the only CD that I know has "Kiss Me Goodbye" on it.
