Movie synopsis

THE GOLDEN COMPASS is an adaptation of the first book in the beloved but controversial fantasy series by Phillip Pullman. The story opens with Lyra Belacqua (Dakota Blue Richards) an orphan girl who lives in an alternate world that is similar to earth, but where people's souls exist outside of their bodies in animal form. The people are ruled by a shadowy and oppressive council known as the Magisterium, which is doing it's best to keep everyone from getting information about what is called "Dust." Lyra's Uncle Asriel (Daniel Craig) has been researching Dust, and he has seen to it that Lyra is given safe shelter at Jordan College. But when the visiting Mrs. Coulter (Nicole Kidman) arrives, she asks Lyra to accompany her on a trip to the North to meet the Panserbjorne, a race of armored bears. Before Lyra leaves, the Headmaster gives her a golden compass, a device which only she can read, and from which she can intuit the truth. Lyra leaves with Mrs. Coulter, but when she learns that her friends have been kidnapped by "Gobblers," she heads out to find them, and soon joins forces with the nomadic Gyptians, some witches, and an armored bear called Iorek Byrnison (voice by Ian McKellen). Lyra finds her friends, and so discovers the evil plans the Magisterium has cooked up for the world's children. By the film's end, she has vowed to track down her Uncle Asriel, and to discover the true power of Dust.Hollywood had a tricky time of taming this tale, as Pullman's books portray religion - the Catholic Church in particular - in a less than flattering light. The film version carefully steers clear of these themes, and instead puts its enormous budget into creating visually stunning effects. While fans of the books may find fault with this streamlined version, children are sure to revel in the many talking animals and whimsical airships.

Confusing to those who have not read the book

Created: 19/05/08
This is a tough book to make into movie. While fantasy and sci-fi readers have a lot of experience with the alternate universe trope, the average movie goer does not. Complicating it further, you have a book that was written as a counter-point to Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia and viewed by many as anti-Christian, and in particular as anti-Catholic.
It is set in a world where the church, very similar to the Catholic church at the time of the reformation, is trying to suppress that which will diminish its power and control (google Galileo and Copernicus)
Because of the controversial sub-texts, the unfamiliar trope and complex story, the makers of this movie have chosen to make it into an action movie without spending too much time introducing the viewer into this strange alternate reality. Concepts such as dust and daemons, and characters like the gyptians and witches must appear as confusing to those who have not read the book. As a result, the motivations of the characters are unclear as are their subsequent actions.
On the plus side - the CGI is fantastic. The daemons are great and the armored bears awe inspiring. Pullman's world comes alive in all its baroque glory.

The amount a mayhem is not high for a PG movie, but what would scare the younger kids the most is pain experienced by the young children in the movie when their daemons/souls are amputated. This is not a movie for the under 10 crowd.

Golden Compass 2-Disk Platinum Series DVD

Created: 08/11/08
Excellent-quality DVD for people who want a behind-the-scenes look at the production design, casting, costumes, props, voice talent, and CGI work that went into The Golden Compass motion picture.
The director's commentary was revealing, and included a mention of a newly-released Bill Pullman novel based on the Lee Scoresby and Iorek Byrnison characters called: "Once Upon a Time in the North" released in hardback in April 2008 after the film was released.
Watching the construction of the alethiometers used in the film and seeing how the ice bears were realized was a real treat.

Pretty Good Movie

Created: 24/01/09
This is the movie version of my favorite book. I saw it the day it came out, but I was dissapointed at how many very important things were changed. The movie by itself was excellent, but no where near to the book. I recommend this for sci-fi fans and fantasy fans. Also read the trilogy, amazing books. Good movie.

Unfortunate ending.

Created: 15/11/10
I sat down and watched this movie, by the time it was over I had totally enjoyed this movie. The end definately left it open for part two, then I read up on this trilogy of books. This movie was left open for part two and three and then the producton company decided they did not get enough interest and therefore after the first movie, they canned the idea. So, when you watch this movie, it ends and there is no chance of seeing what happens next, tis a sad thing. Makes you want to complain big.
