Multiple Redemption Provides the Surprises
Created: 11/10/06
"Good Will Hunting" is one of the best films of this genre. Redemption films tend to be over-sentimental, over-moralistic, or simply over the top. Thanks to great performances from Robin Williams and Matt Damon, this avoids most of the obvious traps. Gus van Sant directs the film with occasional subtlety and many deft touches. The viewer is never really in doubt about the outcome; it is the multiple redemption that gives the story extra and surprising punch.
Will Hunting, an emotionally challenged mathematical genius from South Boston spends his time drinking, fighting and generally challenging authority wherever he finds it. Perverse vanity cannot prevent him from completing equations displayed as challenges by a professor at MIT. Brought together with a psychiatrist (Robin Williams), he moves from confrontation to passive resistance to acceptance of his own emotions and needs. The interplay between the two provides the emotional backbone to the story, while the interplay of his mathematical facility and his encounters with the professor with the grinding dullness of the jobs he works provides the intellectual to-and-fro. For love interest he uses his mind to attract a girl at Harvard (Minnie Driver) and uses his emotional inadequacy to maintain a distance.
Self discovery at the hands of the psychiatrist is predictable but cleverly presented. His conflicts with authority are deftly drawn; the plot works right through to the final interplays between Will and the conflicting elements of his life.

A shining, shimmering, sparkling gem of a movie!

I found this to be an amazing, gripping, tragic, funny, sensational and beautiful told story starring a few of my favourite actors - Robin Williams, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Minni Driver who did a fantastic job. I first saw this when I was quite young and I remember really liking it, but thought it had an awful lot of bad language in it =o) however, I never actually understood it until I watched it in my teen years and it became one of my top films. The acting is just amazing. I love a film with real meaning that stays with you long after it's over. I'm definitely buying the DVD as I'm replacing all of my VHS movies, this one's a must have!!!

This movie was so awesome. I just loved it. Matt Damon, Minnie Driver and Robin Williams did a fantastic job.
Will Hunting (Matt) plays a janitor from the slums who is a genious. He works impossible math problems secretly at night while he's cleaning the floors.
Will, coming from a poor background has trouble with relationships and getting close to anyone.
Its really a great movie about finding yourself, learning how to love and trust after a rocky past, and just having a great life with great friends.
I would definatly recommend this movie for teens and adults.

This is one of those movies that will be great forever I'm sure. It's such a great combonation of funny, heart warming, inspirational, and just plain smart. Its got a little bit of everything, including an adorable quirky romance. The cast has great chemistry, and Robin Williams plays such an amazing role. I love the way this movie captures "Will's" emotions. His confusion, depression, joy, love and loylty. It's amazing. A must have for any movie collection.
My favorite scene is when Will is outside the window, looking in on the cocky college student that he had just verbally dueled (and won of course) and he says "Do you like apples?" The guy inside thinks he's lost his mind or something, but answers "Yes" so Will slams a napkin up against the glass, with skyla's (the girl that the cocky guy was trying to impress) number on it and he says "Well I got her number, How do you like those apples?" Too funny. Total classic scene. Love it.
