Movie synopsis

Based on Nicholas Pileggi's book WISEGUY, Martin Scorsese's GOODFELLAS is a wry, violent, and exhilarating film about the life of Henry Hill, an aspiring criminal who ends up in the FBI's witness protection program after testifying against his former partners. As a poor Irish-Italian growing up in 1950s New York City, Hill (Ray Liotta) rises through the ranks of his Brooklyn neighborhood's organized crime branch, and with money from the mob he begins living the good life, complete with a beautiful bride, Karen (Lorraine Bracco), a fancy house, and the best seats at the most exclusive restaurants. A botched robbery lands Henry in prison for a brief period of time, and when he gets released, his reckless infidelities and drug abuse damage his association with his adopted family.Scorsese's film is a visual and sonic onslaught, featuring a brilliant pop-music soundtrack and stunning camera work--including the infamous Steadicam one-take that introduces the audience to the Copacabana's patrons. He uses the songs to infuse a breathtaking, invigorating rhythm into every scene. As the psychopathic Tommy DeVito, Joe Pesci delivers an unforgettable performance that is alarming in its cold-blooded callousness, helping to cement GOODFELLAS' place as a classic portrait of life in the mob.

One Of "THE BEST" For Its Genre!! GOODFELLAS Is A 10!

Created: 30/03/09
When Martin Scorsese, one of the world's most skillful and respected directors, reunited with two-time Oscar-winner Robert De Niro in GoodFellas, the result was one of the most powerful films of the year. Based on the true-life best seller Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi and backed by a dynamic pop/rock oldies soundtrack, critics and filmgoers alike declared GoodFellas great. It was named 1990's best film by the New York, Los Angeles and National Society of Film Critics. And it earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Robert De Niro received wide recognition for his performance as veteran criminal Jimmy "The Gent" Conway. And as the volatile Tommy DeVito, Joe Pesci walked off with the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Academy Award nominee Lorraine Bracco, Ray Liotta and Paul Sorvino also turned in electrifying performances. You have to see it to believe it - then watch it again. GoodFellas explores the criminal life like no other movie. One of the BEST for it's genre!!!

Goodfellas

Created: 10/02/10
Goodfellas is a classic gangster flick, and a must have for any dvd collection. It features Joe Pesci, Ray Liota, and robert Deniro. It is directed by martin Scorcese. Goodfellas performed well at the box office, grossing $46.8 million domestically, well above its $25 million budget; it received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards but only won one for Pesci in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role category. Scorsese's film won five awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts and was named best film of the year by the New York Film Critics Circle, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the National Society of Film Critics. Goodfellas is often considered one of the greatest films ever, both in the genre of crime and in general and was deemed "culturally significant" and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the United States Library of Congress.
In closing, I would say if you haven't seen this movie, it is a must watch. Hope my review was helpfull, enjoy!

Very realistic

Created: 06/11/09
This is not like the typical crime movie. The criminals and gangsters in here are not superheroes like many other movies in this genre make them to be. These people are down to earth who dont know any other way to live other than cut the corners and take short cuts. The characters in Goodfellas are not good fellas at all; they only look at their own benefits, and care nothing about others. The much declared love and care for one another in the group, these good wills are only evident during good times. When things go sour, everyone looks after their own behinds and nobody else's. Wifes and kids dont mean anything to them, they are only for cover-ups and convenience purposes. Partners? Good if they dont screw you up. And if they do? Whack them, only dead man can be trusted. And if you are going to get whacked? Volunteer for the police's witness protection program and screw your ex-mates. The gangster world is nothing romantic and honorable, and everything about business and self-interest.
This movie is so realistic, there is no climax. Everything just happens. The characters dont have much conscience and moral awareness, and it is not the movie's aim to judge the characters. The story lets everything goes on a fixed flow, and without a breakthrough from anyone in the film, the latter part becomes stagnant. By being what it is, however, Goodfellas stands out as a good portrait of the life of a gangster.

GoodFellas...mafia movie at it's finest...

Created: 08/07/06
This is an excellent mafia film. I like how it is narrated by Ray Liotta and follows his life from a kid into adulthood and the effect the mafia has on his life growing up. With Robert Deniro, Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci this movie is an excellent watch. For anyone who follows the Sopranos you will see a few of the regulars from the series, in some of there earliest roles, no surprise it's in a mafia movie though.

To the reviewer who said the movie wasn't complete, it's a 2 sided dvd. Try playing it from side A then when it finishes flip it over to side B.
