Album Notes
2 LPs on 1 CD; 1 song omitted from original 2-LP release ("Affair on 8th Avenue").Personnel: Gordon Lightfoot (vocals, guitar); Terry Clements (guitar, mandolin); Red Shea (guitar); Ollie Strong, Pee Wee Charles (steel guitar); Larry Good (banjo); Bruce Good (autoharp); Charlie McCoy (harmonica); Nick DeCaro, Hargus "Pig" Robbins (piano); Rick Haynes, John Stockfish, Junior Huskey (bass guitar); Jim Gordon , Kenny Buttrey, Barry Keane (drums); Milt Holland (percussion).Arrangers: Lee Holdridge ; Randy Newman; Nick DeCaro; Bob Thompson .This re-release of Gordon Lightfoot's first greatest hits album, originally published in the mid-1970s, contains a medley of his first hit songs, "I'm Not Saying" and "Ribbon of Darkness" (the latter made famous by Marty Robbins), as well as many other '60s and early-'70s classics like "Early Morning Rain," the brooding "Sundown," and "If You Could Read My Mind." Lightfoot's sure way with a lyrical narrative, coupled with his appealingly diffident baritone voice, combines pop charm with artistic integrity, and these tracks sound as fresh today as when they were first recorded.

If you wanted one Gordon Lightfoot CD this is the one. It has all of his best and none of the rest. You feel like you are in the back woods of Canada, when you listen. "A Song for a Winters Night", "Canadian Railroad Trilogy", "Early Morning Rain" along with the other 18 songs on the album make for a great listening experience. If you like folk a all this is a must have album. I wish they were all this good.

The album tells a story

Created: 07/09/06
The album is a nice sampling of the hits from those years. The sound quality is a little uneven, but the cuts are from different years, what else would you expect. The album has very nice liner notes. Not much to dislike if you are a Gordon Lightfoot fan. If all you've ever heard is "If you could read my mind" and "Sundown", then there is a lot in store here.

How can you go wrong?

If you're looking at this CD, you're probably familiar with Gordon Lightfoot already. Who hasn't heard "Sundown" or "If You Could Read My Mind" on the radio?

Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian treasure, and this CD is a fantastic introduction to Gordo's music. It is also the perfect road-trip CD for folkies who want what are arguably Gordon's top 21 songs.

Any true Lightfoot fan will want to collect each of his individual albums, but this CD is an easy "score", since it brings all of his best onto one platter. Buy it and keep it in the car, and I promise you won't be disappointed.

Gord's Gold

Created: 09/09/10
I love Gordon Lightfoot and have since high school. I had Gord's Gold on cassette tape and frankly the tapes are about worn out and the stereo doesn't work so the vinyl is worthless for the time being. I was so thrilled that ebay offered Gordon Lightfoot CD's and at prices I could afford. I am not picky about used CDs and delighted to find them. I decided to buy this CD and Gordon's second volume of great hits. I love them both and it is great to have him back in my collection of music and on my MP3 player. Both sellers were prompt and the CDs are in great shape. I am well pleased.
