The Greatest Game Ever Played (DVD, 2006)

Bill Paxton, Shia LaBeouf, Justin Ashforth|Theatrical release: 2005 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

The second film directed by actor Bill Paxton is a marked departure--in both form and content--from his debut, 2001's FRAILTY, a shadowy, gothic tale of murder. THE GREATEST GAME EVER PLAYED is a sports movie slash Horatio Alger rags-to-riches tale with undertones of class consciousness and social critique. The story is based on a real-life event--the 1913 U.S. Open golf championship--at which two equally sympathetic young men, both of whom grew up economically and socially disadvantaged, go club to club in one of the most exciting and dramatic athletic events of the early 20th century. The film focuses on the competition between the British star Harry Vardon (Stephen Dillane) and the young American prodigy Francis Ouimet (HOLES star Shia LaBoeuf). Though they hail from opposite sides of the Atlantic, the struggles that the two young golfers have had to overcome are markedly similar; both grew up in hard-scrabble, working-class homes that happened to be adjacent to golf courses, and both were preternaturally disposed to the game. In addition, both must defy the disdain of the golfing gentry. Vardon is already a reigning champion and international darling when Ouimet makes it to his first tournament to battle him. Though enough backstory is provided to connect the viewers to the characters, the meat of the film is the dramatic unfolding of the tournament. With expert editing and fluid camera work, Paxton films close-up views of the golfing action in a manner that recalls the kinetic pool shots in Martin Scorsese's THE COLOR OF MONEY. With each stroke, the competition becomes closer and the mood more tense, culminating in an explosive outcome that, while not unexpected, pulls at the heartstrings as do all good tales of triumph over adversity.

It was a great movie. I enjoy most golf movies and this one was no different. It has lessons for life as golf usually does. Harry Vardon and Francis Ouimet were the golfers the movie was based on and it was very good.

The Greatest Game Ever Plalyed

This movie is a must for golfers. It is a great family movie and there are many lessons taught throughout the movie. Not just for golfers but they may enjoy it more. Very good acting and the setting was great. The movie deviates from the true story but still very good with the same result. All the characters depicted are real. Even down to the caddy. Google these characters and read about them once you watch the movie. I would highly recommend it to families who like good, clean stories. No sex, violence or cursing.

Subtlety Wins

Created: 05/11/06
Not your typical sports themed flick, The Greatest Game Ever Played is a dance between passion of sport and class struggle. The characters are complex and fade between hero and villian. One doesn't have to be a golf fan to enjoy this story of hope and dreams, persistance and passion. A fine example of cinematic production.

Great family movie

Created: 22/08/08
This movie is a great family movie. Although artistic license was taken with the story it was based on an event that actually happened and on real individuals. Great role models for children on what it is to be truly good sports from a time when sportsmanship was taken seriously.

The match that inspired America to embrace the game of Golf

 | Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.
Created: 28/09/11
A great historical background on how the game of golf gained its popularity in America.. Based on the true story of Golf's first american hero, Francis Ouimet shocked a nation by becoming the first amateur to win a U.S. Open. The 1913 US Open final round paired 1900 U.S. Open and eventual 6 time British Open champion, Englishman Harry Vardon against a 20 year old amateur playing on a USGA exemption on a course he caddied on across the street from his home. Along with his 10 year old caddie, Eddie Lowery, Francis brakes a vow he made to his father to give up golf in place of a full time job, Francis goes against the odds and lifts a nation to believe that golf is a game that can be enjoyed by everyone.
